Abhimanyu Mithun is a man of pace and a good model for youngsters to follow. The young fast
bowler worked hard to be a discus thrower until the age of 17, working hard on his fitness at his
father's gym and even competing at the State level.
Mithun caught the eye of RCB Coach Ray Jennings in trials held before the 2009 IPL season and was
drafted into the team for his ability to operate at a good pace consistently. He played one not very
memorable IPL game in 2009, but exploded upon his Ranji debut. Mithun played Uttar Pradesh on
his debut and took 11 wickets in the match including a hat-trick in the 2nd innings, helping Karnataka
win by 185 runs.
Mithun's ODI debut came soon against South Africa in February 2010 followed by his Test debut
on the tour of Sri Lanka. Showing grit and dedication in the tests, Abhimanyu Mithun ran in hard
and never flagged despite the unhelpful nature of the pitches. He batted enterprisingly in the lower
order too. Mithun contributed to India's series levelling win but returned to the domestic scene
when the senior bowlers were declared fit for the next series.
He came to the fore in IPL4, forming a lethal pace attack with Zaheer Khan and Sreenath Aravind as
RCB stormed their way to the finals.
RCB Highlights
RCB vs. DD, Delhi, 2011
Mithun had good match in the field at Delhi running out Sehwag who was attempting a cheeky
single, getting Victorian biffer Mathew Wade with a delivery that straightened into his stumps after
pitching, and using the angles and the crease to have DD's top scorer James Hopes caught behind
right when the slog overs had started. He made a duck in the tense chase later but his bowling
efforts had been enough for an RCB win.
RCB vs. MI, Chennai (2nd Qualifier), 2011
Not a great match for him in the bowling department but he redeemed himself with his fielding.
Kieron Pollard had smacked a Vettori delivery high in the air and it was about to make an almost
vertical descent just inches past the boundary rope in Mumbai's dugout at long-off. Mithun
stationed himself right at the edge of the rope, watched the ball all the way into his outstretched
hand, held on tight and pivoted on his heel to stay inside the field and celebrated an amazing catch.
