Royal Challengers Bangalore, also called RCB is the Bangalore based
franchise of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The team is owned by the
Bangalore based United Breweries Group headed by Dr. Vijay Mallya.
With Anil Kumble at the helm, the team rose from a bottom two finish
in 2008 to end as the runners up in 2009 and semi finalists in 2010,
adding another runners up finish in 2011 with Kumble continuing his
involvement as Mentor. RCB has also qualified for three editions of Champions League T20 so far. RCB won 8 games out of 16 in IPL 2012 but could not qualify for the play offs or the 2012 CLT20.
Coached by South African stalwart Ray Jennings, the side is led by the
steely New Zealand allrounder Daniel Vettori and the exciting young
Virat Kohli, the only RCBian to be retained from the initial roster is
the team's Vice Captain.
Along with Vettori's formidable leadership, the team also boasts of
another world class spinner in Muttiah Muralitharan, four of the most
devastating batsmen in international cricket in Virat, AB de Villiers,
Chris Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan and in addition, some of India's
brightest upcoming talent such as Abhimanyu Mithun, Saurabh Tiwary,
Cheteshwar Pujara and Vijay Zol.
