Pujara - Wall under construction
He has been making heads turn with his on-field performances. A face that is more or less likely to stick on to the Test side is Cheteshwar Pujara. 2013 has given him quite a few chances to prove his mettle and he did not disappoint by and large. The on-going series in South Africa added a few more feathers to his cap. And one must add, he is a delight to watch bat.
With the regulars in the top order failing to create an impact, it is Pujara who has unabashedly taken many an innings forward with his discipline and consistent momentum. His sense of responsibility reminds us of a few matured and veteran batsmen who strived to keep it going under any circumstances.
While India is in dire need of a reliable batsman, Pujara with his bankable attitude is fitting into the role seamlessly. In the wake of a rather dismal performance by the Indian side in the series in South Africa, Cheteshwar finds himself in high regard amongst his team and the selectors due to his impressive 153 in the first Test and a consistent performance through the series.
Earlier in the year, as the captain of India A, Pujara did show his capabilities as a team decision maker, but what really shone were his batting abilities. If given recurrent chances to play in the Test side and if he manages to cling on to this form, Pujara can slowly be touted as the next wall of Indian cricket.
