Should Asia Cup be reserved for young players only?

Verdict

The Asia Cup is too important a tournament to make it an experiment. We need to pick and choose the tournaments we try out youngsters in. Rotation is a policy we should try in bilateral ODI series and select the best, most consistent performers for important tournaments like the Asia Cup, Champions Trophy, and T20/ODI World Cups.

“ The Asia Cup is not the place to find out how young talent fares. ”
“ The Asia Cup is an ideal low level tournament to try out youngsters. ”
Tania Dey: The correct idea would be to balance experience and youth, never send an U-25 team. The Asia Cup is a prestigious competition, second only to the World Cup and on the same level as the Champions Trophy. Youngsters need guidance of seniors, that is how they grow, making them learn everything from scratch by themselves will only set them back. It could even turn back spectacularly if players are demotivated.
Monish Moorthy: With only 4 teams competing, it gives the young guns very good opportunity and exposure to perform and cement their chances in the International Playing 11 at lesser risk. It will also train them to play against teams outside India. This also gives some rest for the senior players who can guide the juniors and train them to become better players.
The playing 11 can also experiment with various batting positions to ensure that we have strong opening pairs, healthy middle order players and wide variety of bowling options to choose from.

nd if the youngsters fail..then it will be said that couple of games are not enough,,,i hardly see more than 3 or 4 senior players in the current asia cup nd still talking about youngsters...lol

It is important to treat the Asia cup with respect because it is one of the rare occasions we play our biggest rivals, Pakistan. Moreover Sri Lanka are always competitive and Bangladesh can be a dangerous side in the sub continent. It is a fight for bragging rights in Asia:))
17 Mar 2012
A team will succeed only when it has a proper blend of young blood and experienced guys......IPL should be the stage for the young players.....not the International tournaments.....at International level..India should always look to place their best playing XI on the field...

NOT THE BEST TOURNAMENT FOR OUR YOUNGSTAR'S TO PROVE

The Asia Cup will provide India a chance to make amends for their dismal performance in the triangular series in Australia where they won just three out of eight matches. After having flopped in two consecutive overseas tours in England and then Australia, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni knows the importance of a good start that will hold them in good stead in the regional tournament. "Over the years the format has changed in the sense now there are four good sides. It is a very short series, and it is very important to start with a positive note because it's not very often that you play in a tournament where all the Asian countries are playing together," Dhoni said. India are coming into the tournament with just a few changes in the squad that played in Australia with hard-hitting batsman Yusuf Pathan and pacer Ashok Dinda drafted into side, while Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav have been 'rested' due to injuries. The Asia Cup is also an ideal platform for Sachin Tendulkar to record his much-awaited 100th international ton after having missed the feat in the Test series against Australia and the subsequent triangular series. The tournament will also provide another opportunity to young players like Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja to prove their worth after producing a below-par performance in tough Australian conditions. Young Virat Kohli, on the other hand, will be oozing with confidence following his impressive showing in Australia, which earned him the post of vice-captain in Sehwag's absence. But looking at India's inconsistent showing in Australia, Dhoni has a lot to ponder ahead of his side's tournament opener against Sri Lanka at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. "It's not that we have done really badly. Of course, we had a patch where we have not done consistently well. Especially when it comes to the ODI format, I think we have done quite well. So we are hoping that we will stick to it and be consistent throughout the tournament," Dhoni said. The series will also see a keen contest between Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan for the lone all-rounder's spot in the playing eleven. "Unfortunately he's (Virender Sehwag) not there. We will miss him, he is one of the most dangerous openers. But this means we have one space in the playing eleven right now. It may go to somebody like Yusuf Pathan so that we can balance the flair and the firepower and the stability that's needed. "I think it's an opportunity for someone like a Yusuf or a Ravindra Jadeja to do well and grab that number six position," Dhoni said. On the bowling front, India boasts of a relatively young pace attack in R Vinay Kumar, Ashok Dinda, Praveen Kumar and Irfan Pathan, while the spin department will be led by Ravichandran Ashwin and will have leg-spinner Rahul Sharma for company. On paper there is nothing much to differentiate between the two sides, but going by present form Sri Lanka undoubtedly hold an edge over the Indians. Sri Lanka have been a resurgent side this year. They narrowly lost the five-match series in South Africa 2-3 early this year and reached the finals of the just-concluded triangular series in Australia, only to lose it but not before giving a tought fight to the home team. But the Sri Lankans have come here as a tired side after the long tri-series in Australia, where they played five matches in the last 10 days. "The intensity (of the CB series) was really high because we were performing at a very high level. Even though we lost the finals I thought the commitment of the players and the energy level was very good," Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene said. "International cricket is such now, you need to adapt very quickly mentally and physically to the schedules that we have," he said. If the islanders wish to win their fifth Asia Cup title, they will have to rejuvenate themselves in no time as one bad day in office can hurt their cause.

14 Mar 2012
Up course this time there no ego between them.
14 Mar 2012
i think, we have to give chance for young players, but we didn't leave all senior players at a time, because it is not a place to test our young players ability to play, we have to give chance for only one or two players
14 Mar 2012
talents matters.
14 Mar 2012
age does not matter but performance does. no point in including a player for his personel milestone yet has not achived and team india loose instead let the youngsters .
14 Mar 2012
I completely disagree with Monish. There is no low level tournament held by ICC. ICC gives equal priority to all the matches. And, what makes you think this is a low level tournament? Team which play Asia cups are best teams. SL, Pakistan and India are WC champions till now. To talk about Bangla, they are also one of the dangerous side. They have sent India back in the previous WC. Young talents must be given a chance, but seniors should also be present in the squad or else it will be like a child without a parent.
13 Mar 2012
the asia cup shud be for younger players as selectors in search for the uproaring new talents for the 2015 world cup so i think i am for this....
13 Mar 2012

13 Mar 2012

we know old players will get retire. so,after they get rettire only the young guns should lead the team to victory.so,my opinion is to give them chance to prove themselves a chance to prove...
11 Mar 2012
Since the senior players are choosing their tours or the selectors giving them rest, the youngsters are getting chances. It doesn't make any sense to reserve the Asia Cup squad for the youngsters. But Asia Cup involving two top teams apart from India and unpredictable Bangladesh the teams should look their combinations right and play full strength teams.
11 Mar 2012
asia cup good for our young guns
11 Mar 2012
With the seniors not doing well and Dravid calling it quits it is high-time we gave the younger players a chance..especially the likes of Manoj Tiwary and Ashok Dinda..sad Robin Uthappa is not there though..neither is Saha

In a cricketing nation like India there is a lot of young talent.the Asia cup is like a forum to discover this talent.so yes youngsters should be given a try.
10 Mar 2012
obviously not!!! this is our national team, not a testing team, to check who fares well. only experience talks, nobody else does
10 Mar 2012
Seniors should lead from the front and help young minds in their game so that it brings out the best from these young talents of India

Asia cup must not be taken as a low level cup. This over-confidence in the indian team has led to loss of series' abroad. its high time they win another series.
09 Mar 2012
Yes youngsters should be given a chance.
09 Mar 2012
We should play a mix of both young guns and experienced players, the main reason is two of the other three teams are known to be arch rivals for us especially Pakistan !!!!
09 Mar 2012
it should be mixure of Young and senior players..So that young people can have some exp with seniors...
08 Mar 2012
A whole Young team is not the right way to go, a blend of talent is a better approach !
08 Mar 2012
Youngsters alone would bring our demise, mainly due to lack of experience in such big matches, as we have already observed with many youngsters playing in the IPL.
08 Mar 2012
A combined effort of young talent and mature players is whats best for the Asia Cup !
08 Mar 2012
A Young and Old balance will be the best approach to guide young minds.
08 Mar 2012
A mix of talent is what we need, not a full youngster team !
08 Mar 2012
I want the oldies to play it and win.
08 Mar 2012
It is should not be considered as low level tournament in international level for test the youngsters

asia cup isnt meant for yound ones to prove themselves or for experinced players to how their talent... its just that in this tournamnet players like kohli come out shining.. n so me others players take no advantage f it.,.
18 Mar 2012
If the youngster get a chance to prove themselves in this type of tour then its worth a try .........Asia cup is kind of low priority and not needed. So youngster should be. We cannot have excuses every time!!!
18 Mar 2012
equal importance should be given to senior and young players, there is nothing like more importance should be given to young players, without senior players the game would be a flop show....

Its not the matter to categorize the players with their age.....only consistent performance is essential for selection!
14 Mar 2012
yes asia cup is for youngsters to test talent
14 Mar 2012
Asia Cup is definitely a prestigious competition. It's like an Asian World Cup. According to me, the Asia Cup shouldn't be reserved for young players only. Yes, young players must be included in the team but that doesn't mean that you can drop the seniors from the team who have experience. Just as Monish said, the playing 11 can can also experiment various batting positions to ensure that we have strong opening pairs, healthy middle order players and wide variety of bowling options. If the Asia Cup would be reserved for youngsters only, they could mess everything up.
13 Mar 2012
i think a prestigious cup like asia cup should be taken more seriously.Because fans like us always wants the team to win and the so called young players lack this confidence in winning...
13 Mar 2012
yes, who are seniors that are missing Zak and Sehwag. But u still have Sachin, GG, Dhoni u can learn from them too. Its right time to test them before the WC2015
13 Mar 2012

08 Mar 2012
without experience there is nothing de youngsters can do... so its better to play youngsters with seniors rather than replace the seniors completely..
07 Mar 2012

04 Mar 2012
asia cup could be a very gud test for the players which r in the selectors mind........i think it should be reserved youngsters but yes when u play a tournament u always need experience...........
03 Mar 2012
When senior players are not able to perform outside the subcontinent, how can you expect the young players to have a go there. Ideally they should be given international exposure within asia first and then try then outside.
03 Mar 2012
in view of 2015 world cup, youngsters must be given chances from asia cup.....
03 Mar 2012
India should give chances to young talents.
02 Mar 2012
Yeah 100 % correct !! When are you guys gonna give the chance to younsters !!! CB series is a perfect example of how the seniors played !! Many young Talents need Exposure !!! They will win !! Selectors are intested in Sachin's 100th 100 and not M.Tiwary in the Team !!!
