The Australian women’s team swept away the recent T20 title and shone on the global stage with their superb performances. I had the opportunity to visit beautiful New South Wales (NSW) and speak to Joanne Broadbent, the coach of the NSW women’s team, the Lend Lease Breakers.

The Lend Lease Breakers are the most successful women’s team in Australian cricket, with an impressive track record and an impressive talent development programme.

The Australian Women’s Team just won the T20 world cup, congratulations! Must be a great feeling?

This victory was a great way to finish off our cricket season. Winning occurs when a group of people work together towards a common goal. Sponsors, coaches, support staff, administrators and players all contributed to this fantastic victory. It’s about being a team both on and off the field. The joint effort between CA and State/Territory staff gives us the best chance of winning.

Your team, the Lend Lease Breakers (NSW women’s team) has a particularly spectacular record…

Yes indeed! This season, we won out 9th straight National 50-over title. We have also won 16 National 50-over titles in the last 18 seasons. We have played in 4 out of a possible 5 National T20 Finals, winning once in 2012/13 which also made us the first team to win both the National 50-over and T20 titles in the same year.

NSW has consistently had the highest representation of any State in the Australian team, and recently had five players part of the team that won the World T20. Four of those players – Alex Blackwell, Ellyse Perry, Erin Osborne and Alyssa Healy have been part of all three World T20 winning teams in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

How do the Lend Lease Breakers encourage young, budding talent?

Our Australian/Breakers players are fantastic role models and are very active in schools and the cricket community promoting the game to younger girls. We have excellent coaching programs that provide our young talent to be developed in their skills both on and off the field. The opportunity for girls to play cricket in schools and clubs is growing all the time and we are certainly moving towards being Australia’s favourite sport.

What is your view on the state of women’s cricket world-over? What inputs would be necessary to help it develop further?

The game is making great progress. It was wonderful to see West Indies make the World Cup T20 finals again as well as South Africa rising to the top 4 teams. The International Cricket Council is doing a fantastic job developing the next group of countries playing in qualifying games during May. Japan, Vanuatu and PNG are improving all the time.  The T20 game is certainly the way forward for women’s cricket and with more games being played yearly it will definitely develop the game further.

For those who want to make a career in cricket – what would you advice be?

Train to be the best you can be every day. Take 100% responsibility for your decisions in life. Love what you do and be passionate about your journey in cricket.
