A Go Green Initiative that can change lives!

This article is my effort to highlight a simple, but, highly effective and age old technique of Rain Water Harvesting. If implemented effectively by all of us, it can provide drinking water to all.

Rainwater
harvesting, as the name suggests is the title given to a procedure in
which various techniques are used to utilize rain water for human
needs. Rainwater harvesting is extremely beneficial in areas where the
water scarcity is a major problem. We Indians, have long been familiar
with the concept and even in the previous centuries, the rulers of
erstwhile kingdoms have been known to build reservoirs, baolis and to
protect the natural ponds and lakes. They were very much alive to the
principles of rainwater harvesting and had mastered techniques
regarding the same.

A good rainwater harvesting system comprises of three essential components.

1.
Catchment - Catchment is the surface area that receives the rainfall
and from where, the rainwater would be collected and harvested later to
fulfill various human needs. In common methods, rooftops are the most
preferred catchment areas as the water falling on the roofs is less
likely to get contaminated with soil and other ground based pollutants.

2.
Transportation of rainwater - Once rainwater is collected in the
catchment area, it is essential to quickly transfer all that water or
else the catchment area is likely to overflow and also, if the water
remains in the open catchment area, after the rain has stopped, it is
likely to evaporate with passage of time and also to become a breeding
ground for mosquitoes. Therefore, a swift and clean system of drainage,
pipelines etc needs to be built to facilitate rapid transfer of
rainwater, thus collected.

3.
Storage - The success of any rainwater harvesting system depends upon
good storage of collected water. The storage facility has to be such
that, it avoids loss of water due to vaporization, seepage into the
ground and also nullifies the chances of the stored water getting
polluted. If storage facility is good and can hold the water for long
durations, that will ensure the success of a rainwater harvesting
system.

Benefits of rainwater harvesting :-

In
this age of water scarcity and droughts, each passing year is depleting
earth's potable water resources. It is easier to ensure good water
supply when the rainfall is good, but, in the times when the rainfall
is insufficient or in seasons when the rainfall is typically scarce,
the water stored through the rainwater harvesting techniques is a boon.
It ensures uninterrupted supply of potable water, even in the dry
season.

I hope this provides inspiration and helps in our efforts to beautify our planet and conserve the environment. smile

Dear Rossisboss,

I will definitely have a look at the discussion linked by you. Activities and discussions to avoid climatic changes are directly linked with 'Go Green initiatives' too. They all are aimed at preserving our planet and maintaining the quality of life.

Oh that's perfectly fine if you deleted your comment because you found it unsuitable to public forum.

"We have team of experts and we need awareness of people to make this system work"

You are absolutely right and that is the exact reason why I requested you to create the awareness by sharing the tips with us youngsters. Hope you won't hesitate from sharing your knowledge.

I did not like it so I deleted it ! we are on public forum and decency should be maintained..thats it..We have team of experts and we need awareness of people to make this system work-I am not doing so great-I am small part of-it..! it is a big task indeed..!

You are right Aruna Ji. I never denied that I am not. We all should care for the nature. However, you are an socially active person, who has been working in this field for years, whereas I am just expressing my opinions and have no practical experience.

Awesome! However, deleting the comment because you wanted to come up with another post wasn't necessary. Anyway, would you like to share some technical planning suggestions especially on the RWH system as roughly outlined by me? It will be good to have inputs from an expert who has been working on the concepts outlined by me and to know about the real time efforts and technologies.

Regards,

I am part of it-money is not given to me-its for the state as a whole..it needs alot of techincal work and planning work in cities..I have posted another one in place of deleted one..Right?
Aruna-Desai on 10 Jun 2010, 01:46 PM
Btw Aruna Ji,

It is strange, but, why did you delete your earlier comment?
