Looking at recent past and the impact of the asia cup final result.
Indian team has performed really well in bilateral tournaments. They have defeated srilanka in srilanka in recent one day series. They have won tests away from india as well as retained the Border Gavaskar Trophy recently.
When it comes to triseries/big events we are not living upto the mark. Last years T20 WC, Champions trophy, this years T20 WC and Zimbabwe tri series performance come to my mind. Why are we failing as a team in the big tournaments?
Well past is past, asia cup final this thursday can put many team india critics to rest. With world cup next year its time to start winning tournaments not just bilateral series. Asia cup indian squad has youngsters and some of them can cement there spot in WC Squad if we go on to win asia cup. With the likes of Tendulkar, Sehwag, Uthappa, Yuvraj (possibly) and i am sure Dravid to come in, these young batsmen should be consistent enough to be in the reckoning. Our bowling has been scratchy at times, even though we are revolving around PK, Zak, Nehra and Bhajji. Our own vinay Kumar, Ojha can also grab there chances. India needs a allrounder and we have been telling this from last 20 years, who knows some one can stand up in the next 6-8 months and prove his mettal.
Lets not go into the analysis of what happens if we lose, If we do win i think confidence of the team, team management will be at a high and things can only get better.
Wishing indian team best of luck in the final and i am eagerly watching that this win will go a long way in getting a good squad for the World Cup.
@Maddy: The way you put it sounded very funny, bro :)
@Sachin: Watched the match last evening. Didn't have the patience to watch the whole of it, though. We played well and I'm glad we won. Hopefully, we've broken the jinx of not being able to win the finals of a series!!!
@ Maddy: "....I THINK INDIAN CRICKETERS HAVE SPENT MORE TIME WITH SRI LANKAN CRICKETERS THAN WITH THEIR OWN WIVES AND GIRL FRIENDS..." Hahahahahahahaha
I DONT THINK ANYBODY WILL BE INTERESTED TO WATCH ASIA CUP FINALS TODAY,INDIA AND SRI LANKA ARE PLAYING FOR THE ZILLIONTH TIME IN THE PAST 10 MONTHS AND I THINK INDIAN CRICKETERS HAVE SPENT MORE TIME WITH SRI LANKAN CRICKETERS THAN WITH THEIR OWN WIVES AND GIRL FRIENDS.
ah vignesh you guys are talking about india vs sl, i am talking about what we will get out of it, especially in tommorows final.
Players cant do anything about it if ICC and respective boards decide to have india and SL play every fortnight, all they can do is keep performing well.
After few years people will not remember about how often did India-SL play but what happened in those matches and who won/lost ..
true !! @prometheus is right!!! the IND vs SL games r like total practise matches n nothing more!!@ almost monthly v play dem!! its kinda sick c ing that n moreover this i dont think can be the world cup team!! reasons being sachin n sehwag missing n ya Robins gonna knock big time on the doors of the selectors aafter hes back from injury!!! :)
I dont quite agree with you here. It doesnt matter whom we play and how many times, what matters is winning big tournaments. We have been failing to win multinational tournaments and correcting that now will only increase our confidence. Also its about grooming youngsters, getting those processes in place which area key focus areas.
Leading into the world cup teams will focus mainly on getting right tream balance, building on there bench strength right ...
In all honesty, I wouldn't give a win in the Asia Cup Final much importance because of the simple fact that we'll be playing against Sri Lanka. And the number of times we play SL these days is just nauseating. I'm pretty sure that had the opponent been an SA, Eng or even WI, Ind would hav taken them more seriously than SL. A comment I read on cricinfo was very apt...."India - SL matches have become more of 2 Teams Training together now. It's like a fortnight camp being held at different places".
Aned here's more ..... "Gambhir has meanwhile completed 1000 runs against SL. Not even close to so many against any other team.. can't blame him - he keeps playing them day in and day out."
And here's what Siddharth Monga has to say about Ind-SL matches, "Lord, have mercy on us" (http://www.cricinfo.com/page2/content/story/443528.html)
