I reached Kolkata last night, I was the last chief to be there. Doesn't make me any less excited! The mood at camp RCB is upbeat but relaxed.
We had breakfast at 10am this morning. Met Coach Jennings, and even had a word with Sidhartha Mallya. The KKR players are in the hotel too. Had a nice chat with KKR bowler Charles Langeveldt (remember his hatrick in the last over in a past ODI!). He noticed the book in my hand - Beyond the Boundary, one of the greatest books on cricketing - and we chatted about it. He was very friendly, said someone should write a book about South African cricket. It'd be a huge book he said.
Ran into KKR player Ajantha Mendis in the hotel lift too.
Post breakfast, the Mighty 14 showed up. I gave them a tour of the ITC, they were very excited. One of them, Jackky who writes for the Fan Club as well, came to Kolkata all the way from Bangalore. He's been on a train for the last 14 hours! Thoroughly deserving of the title Mighty Fan. Manish Pandey handed the Mighty 14 fans their jerseys; keep an eye out for their antics, they have some fun stuff planned for when the invade the sea of purple and yellow at the stadium with their royal red and gold.
After that was the team meeting. I can't say much, but here's what I can share. Ray Jennings put together a motivational slideshow and asked the players to respect themselves on the field. Mark Boucher too gave a speach, directed at the younger players, telling them to treat the match as a game.
After that, the four of us chiefs took the team bus to the stadium. They kept mostly to themselves... Praveen Kumar sat at the back of the bus, hindi music blaring from his iPod. He's a total back bencher dude! Virat Kohli was more intense, earphones plugged in, looking out the window, occasionally checking his BlackBerry.
Like I said, the mood is upbeat and relaxed. As the coach said, KKR will put up a tough match in their home stadium. Here's to an RCB win.
