Gayle 'Machine Gun' Fires Away

royal challengers

Gayle's 75 off 32 balls with 7 sixes lights up M Chinnaswamy Stadium before rain interferes with RCB at 143 for 5 off 14 overs against an Opposition Eleven in the first practice match.

Today was the first of the practice matches slated under lights as per the ICC directive of having a stipulated number under certain conditions. After the first ball was bowled, the ebullient RCB coach Ray Jennings declared "That's a full 20 seconds of a late start. We'd better work on that." Rapturous applause around! This was to be expected of Ray. Ever the positive trend setter and the one to keep everybody in good spirits, an atmosphere of seriousness mixed with some humour was there. Yes, this South African is always aiming to make things better. Even before the match is played!

Robin Uthappa caught everybody's eye as he was to be in the opposition eleven that would play against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Sure, there would be a few surprises as the match rolled on, with CM Gautham, RCB's wicketkeeper donning the gloves for the opposition. Yet another surprise was that a few bowlers would bowl for both teams, A Mithun included. Of course this is what practice matches are made of.

RCB batted first. Apparently they'd dominated enough before the start to state that they were ‘de factor winners of the toss,’ which in fact didn't take place. Quite fair, considering RCB wanted to take first strike and get vital practice in. After all, there are barely four days left for the first match, moreover again only four official league matches to make it to the next round. Unlike in IPL where they had 14 league matches!

Out went Mayank Agrawal and who else, monstrous-hitting Chris Gayle. In no time at all, he'd hit the biggest six seen in a long time, a long-on hit that cleared the stadium. That ball must have had ice when it came down! Remember who said this 25 years ago? Allan Border when Karnataka's poster boy and India stumper Sadanand Vishwanath had smoted it to the exact same part of (outside) the stadium. Gayle survived a confident lbw appeal against offie Ryan Ninan (another poster boy in the making) but went on to compile (is that a correct term?!) 75 in 32 balls before falling to left arm spinner KP Appanna. Well, going by the West Indian's fast scroring standards, that might indeed be a correct term, a whirlwind knock probably comprising half that number of balls! Who know if we may see that this season!

So, seven sixes by the West Indian opener showed that he was out to do business. Unfortunately, AB De Villiers fell early whereas Mayank gave the same feeling of resoluteness and adding solidity to the batting that he's done earlier. He too grabbed his opportunity and hit a comprehensive side over mid wicket. Saurabh Tiwary hit two sixes in his 18 whereas Kaif, looking sprightly and in touch, but unfortunately edged one to the wicket keeper.

Syed Mohammad, bowling for the opposition turned his arm over usefully during a Gaylestorm and was rewarded with two wickets while KP Appanna also secured two and SL Akshay one. With Daniel Vettori and Arun Karthik having barely gone in to bat, the rain came down hard and fast and left the match stranded at 143 for 5 off 14 overs.

Those who came to see the match had a treat. The team now awaits the next practice match, scheduled for Wednesday (schedules can change due to net practice intensity and a feel by the coach of what's good for the boys).

So, RCBians hang on, there's be more treats to follow. Get your umbrellas for the rain. And your helmets for the other rain shower in the stands - monstrous hits especially from our beloved Chris!
