India Vs England ODI Series Review
As Harsha Bhogle said at the end “Head and Tail to England but more importantly the middle to india”. A good series victory and a much needed one at that for india ..
After the 2-1 hiding to pakistan before the start of the series, this was a very important ODI series for india. Even after 2-1 loss to Eng in tests and a couple of drawn T20 series against English and pakistani sides, it was always believed (by fans) that india’s ODI side was strong.
Batting was the main focus of the series, lets look at how it fared ...
Before start of series (Points out of 10 - 3):
** Indian openers had a poor ODI Series against pakistan. Good starts are crucial to making big scores and/or chasing decent scores. Pitches were bowler friendly but it was beyond doubt that our batsman had played false shots most of the times.
** Our middle order was shoddy, there was not any saying contribution in any of the 3 matches. Kohli, Yuvi and Raina had a poor series. It looked like bottom 5 in batting and bowlers were flighting to win matches for the team :)
Looking forward - Batsman need to be consistent and spend time in the middle against the moving ball
At the end of the current series (Points out of 10 - 6) :
** Openers did partly well, apart from the first wicket partnership at rajkot, there was nothing much to speak about. Gambhir again had a poor series, ajinkya missed his opportunities, sharma played a good innings in mohali, but needs to do more to secure his position in the side.
** Middle order came to life partly. Raina was amazing and rightly deserved his man of the series award. Kohli has had a disappointing season, apart from 70 odd when chasing a low score. Yuvi too disappointed, kept getting out to spinners and was unlucky in first 2 matches with bad decisions.
** It was again Dhoni, Jadeja and Raina who rescued india. So still a lot of work to do given that we will get tougher pitches and conditions in Eng (Champions trophy) and Aus (2015 World Cup)
Did it happen - Batting woes continues, batsman were found wanting for the moving ball again
Who bowled well against arch rivals pakistan (Points out of 10 - 5):
** While the batters didnt give much for bowlers to defend, relatively inexperienced bowling attack kept trying.
** Bhuvenshwar kumar has been a great find, he along with jadeja and co did well to defend 150 odd in last ODI, a true team effort to avoid whitewash.
Looking forward - Get wickets at the right time, dont give loose bowls to often.
Who bowled well against england (Points out of 10 - 7) :
** Apart from flat deck at rajkot, most of the other pitches offered indian bowlers some assistance. All the bowlers bowled well, except last 2 overs in rajkot and some loose bowling today, overall bowlers did well to win matches for there country.
** Ishant did well as did Jadeja. Ashwin disappointed, he is our wicket taking bowler but has been put into pressure by the opposition batsman.
Did it happen - Yes except rajkot bowlers did really well and improved. Death overs as dhoni said is still top in the list of improvement areas.
Fielding, Captaincy .. (Points out of 10 - 5) Vs Pakistan :
** Fielding was good, even though youngsters did well and saved runs it was overshadowed by our poor batting efforts.
** Dhoni’s captaincy in 3rd ODI was very good, how many times have u heard a player winning man of the match because of his captaincy. In the first match he went to defensive between 30 - 40 overs perhaps a chance missed to win the match.
Looking Forward - More tight fielding and catching plus smart captaincy needed by dhoni to win crucial matches
Fielding, Captaincy .. (Points out of 10 - 8) Vs England:
** Fielding was outstanding, we saved plenty of runs and helped the bowlers who inturn helped the team to 3 important victories
** Dhoni captained well, with jadeja doing his job both with bat and ball, having 5 frontline bowlers helped him depend less on the part timers.
Did it happen - Good fielding and captaincy, yes a tick mark in this area for team india.
Overall a series win was crucial and very much needed on what has been a poor indian season. Still questions remain over batting and consistency.
Looking forward to test series, hopefully no more talks of revenge series but showing the world what this team is made up of ..
