I’ll just pick up the key points that I think need looking
at:

Start - Youngsters not standing up. Obviously it was too big
an occasion for them. May be too many of them were sent in too early. In
strategic terms I think that was complacent. I believe at least Kohli could
have come in after Dravid, considering the flurry of wickets RCB had already
lost.

Note worthy Players

Kallis- Just what is expected of him. Lessons for everyone,
wish he had more strike early on. I would put the blame squarely on the
youngsters again. They need to quit going for glory for the self.

Morgan: Unlucky today. Also, arguably, he tried too much too
soon. At first look he does look really strong and RCB would do well to give
him a run.

Goswami – Big Disappointment. Primarily with the bat. Not
his fault entirely tho. But if you get a run you go about it intelligently,
even in twenty20. Intelligent cricket is supposed to be RCBs brand of cricket.

Major Selection issues: Boucher should be playing every
game. Not only is a a good keeper vital in a fast paced format such as this, he
is also a great improviser at the end of a batting innings. Steyn to me is not
a great Twenty20 pick for Indian conditions at this point in time. He needs
more variety to be successful. Till he does not develop that he should not be
playing. I would play a Vinay Kumar over him and give Boucher a go.

Positives: Dravid-Kallis Partnership to stabilize – In terms
of a 20-20 game it was a good partnership which ensured that RCB would hit a
respectable total before Dravid chopped it on. The feature shot was Dravid’s on
the knee cover drive of Mathews. He looked good. There was also a lesson for the youngsters -
Every ball cannot be hit to the boundary. But at the same time you can pick up
a run of any ball, any ball.

Going forward: In one of Kallis’ column he’d mentioned that
if a franchisee has to go the distance the domestic players need to come good
at the right time. When only 4 overseas players are playing sure they have a
role to play but you cannot burden them to win you the tournament. When it’s a low
scoring game throw a surprise in by say opening the bowling with Kumble &
give him a short leg. Today it was a case of too little too late. I'm sure we'll upgrade our processors before its too late.

As Royal Challengers we keep marching, its only a battle lost the war is ours to win.

I concur - Boo Boo Steyn!! T20 and Indian conditions dont suit him. Give Vinay/Mithun the opportunity. Atleast you go home thinking the youngsters got a chance to make it count.

Goodone Kuber.
I agree- Steyn and Goswami out, Boucher and Vinay in. We cannot blame Kumble for playing Goswami in the first match. He was the highest run getter in the recently concluded domestic competetion and Eden Gardens is his home ground. Unfortunately, it didnot work- so let us move on.

How are boucher and Steyn related in any way? Boucher is a keeper,Steyn is a bowler.Am i getting the math wrong?
Edhunter on 14 Mar 2010, 09:23 PM
@Edhunter - Agree about his ability but effectiveness is what we're discussing. He should make way for Boucher and goswami should for Vinay.
Manish and Kallis to open, Morgan 3 and Kohli/Dravid 4/5 depending on the situation. This is till our other internationals are in...

Dale Steyn should be in included in the playing 11.He is a great bowler first up with his raw pace and bamboozling quickies. He was highly successful on the recent tour to India and had good exposure of bowling on these indian tracks for a month and a half. Was an obvious choice i belive.

@Rahulnraul - i agree, except for Kallis who was tedious clearly because of his mates

@Wizard - My man, Tiwari had relatively less preasure on him chasing a low score, our young guys had too much pressure on them to deliver for the first game...It was only human for them to be slightly jittery..i understand as they did not deliver as professional sportsmen but as inexperienced campaigners they cannot be blamed for it squarely. In a format such as this if the coach or the captain senses jitters the batting order should be revised, corrective action taken. it was 3 young guys one after another... not happening for me....

@ Kallis - I thought he played a seriously tedious innings today! Neither was he rotating the strike first up and nor was he hitting the ball hard. I agree he was losing partners at the other end, but rotating the strike was the least he could do!

@ Youngsters - Goswami was a total misfit. Sorry to say but we need some serious power hitters right at the top when the fielding restrictions are on and Goswami doesn't have it in him to do that. When there is a Pandey or a Robin Uthappa waiting in the wings to do that, why not send them?
Pandey looked scratchy. I hope it was just an off day for him.
Robin looked really good and I pray to god and the RCB team management that he's sent up the order next time so that he gets to play when the fielders are up in the circle. More runs - better start - helps the momentum to build!

@ morgan - He is supposedly a great T20 player. Would love to see more of him. Hope he plays at the #3 or #4 slot. You don't want him dabbing the ball here and there trying to rebuild an innings.

@ Dravid - Probably the finest example of the theory that technically sound batsmen can be great in this format too. Was unlucky to have chopped on but i wish he plays as an improviser than always as a repair-man!

@ Steyn - I don't understand his selection too. At least in today's match. He is a guy who'll give you raw pace. If you don't use it upfront right at the start when we needed wickets, what's his use? Kallis opening the attack was a big mistake and that showed in today's match! And yes, I agree we should have selected Mithun or Vinay Kumar.

Hope we make these corrections asap. Can't afford another bad display next match!

Kuber,

As I see it, the strategy might have been for Kallis to hold one end and the others to go hitting from the other end. He did his job perfectly, but, it was the lack of application from the men at other end, which brought our downfall.

When the coach and the captain showed faith in youngsters, they should have felt confident and played freely. They, rather, looked too overwhelmed and jittery.

We still have time before we get players like White and Taylor join the batting line up and our youngsters need to know that if they are there, then they must be good enough. Manoj Tiwary was a perfect example of what Manish Pandey or Goswami, should have done.
