RCB gets serious about campaign
RCB players ecstatic. Prefer quiet dinner with team. Ready to go to Bengaluru... but wait there's a delay..
Euphoria engulfed the team after the win against the Delhi Daredevils. The RCB players were however not going to get carried away. A simple dinner was all they intended with everybody in attendance. Siddhartha Mallya was there to support his heroes. The big question was where the dinner would be had.
At first, the team assembled in an Irish styled restaurant in the hotel, which was tending to become crowded. So the personal security team led the players through the service route up to the rooftop hall cum restaurant. Saurabh Tiwary joked that they’d arrived for another team meeting! It definitely looked like that with the classroom style seating arrangements. Obviously, it was a mini seminar hall. Virat Kohli appeared and whisked Saurabh away while inviting the others.
It was finally decided to go to a quiet restaurant on the ground floor where there were also some Delhi Daredevils players. Dan Vettori settled himself in a group of friends while Mithun, Bharat Narayan, Arvind and physio Evan Speechly made another one. The togetherness was important and one could see the effort that everybody made to spend some time with this core group while socializing with other friends.
Zaheer Khan arrived, distinct over the past few months with streaks of bleached hair and a mini pony tail grown at the back of his head. Dilshan came by and made space for himself on the crowded couch. A B de Villiers preferred a ‘mobile’ role and shuffled between groups and at times chatted with the security teams and personal bodyguards of both teams.
Manager Avinash Vaidya, ‘George’ to his teammates came by and promised some interesting stories about the development of Bengaluru at another time. He then got busy checking that the bill contained strictly the consumed items. Some of the players had left by this time, so he ensured the staff corrected some items that were supposed to be complimentary.
Rajeshwar, the logistics incharge, said he’d probably need to go to the airport four hours in advance to ensure the team’s bags were checked in and therefore professed that sleep was not on his itinerary ‘tonight.’ A regular feature! Gradually, the rest of the players streaked back to their rooms.
Next morning as they came down to check out just after noon, they got the news that the flight was delayed by 2 whole hours because of a technical snag; the aircraft had not yet arrived in Delhi from its previous flight.
Venkatesh Prasad, ebullient and beaming as ever shared some insights on the previous game and how RCB marshalled its bowling. “Our young bowlers are always taught to think for themselves,” said the lanky ex India pacer. “I don’t shout from the sidelines to direct their every ball but of course, have plenty of advice and encouragement for them before the match and during nets.”
The think tank of RCB gives so much hope and spark to youngsters and this new team in season 4. One hope the journey will find fruition! Until then, fans and players… enjoy the ride!
