Team India left behind ,Afghanistan,in their very first match,of ICC World T20 2012,by a 23 run victory over them at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
Team Afghanistan Skipper,Nawroz Mangal won the toss and decided to field first.Shapoor Zadran took maximum of two wicket for the loosing side.Dawlat Zadran,Karim Sadiq and Mohammad Nabi took one wicket each for the Afghanistan team. Gautam Gambhir's was the earliest wicket taken by Shapoor Zadran, forcing India to go one wicket down at just 15 runs.Gambhir departed with just 10 runs after hitting an inside edge ,back onto the stump.Next batsman Virat Kohli yet again proved his mettle by scoring the much needed 50 runs for the winning side and heightened the Indian scores up to a great extent.Virender Sehwag like Gautam Gambhir, too couldn't contribute much and left almost immediately after G Gambhir, making just 8 runs.India were at a wobbly stage of just 22 for 2.It was then time for , Yuvraj Singh to come out to bat,but he too failed to do much for the team and was able to make just 18 runs which undoubtedly included an awesome over boundary.Suresh Raina scored the second highest of 38 runs, in this match .M S Dhoni and Rohit Sharma remained not out at 18 and 1 respectively,at the clinching of the 1st innings, putting up a target of 159 runs for the oppositions.
The 2nd inning started off with N Mangal and M Shahzad as the opening batsman for the Afghanistan team. They kept on fumbling infront of the Indian bowling side and also kept on loosing wickets at fast and regular intervals.Indian bowling and fielding display was a thing 'to watch out for',which consisted of tremendous effort from Ravichandran Ashwin, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Irfan Pathan and obviously not to forget, Yuvraj Singh, who took a maximum of 3 wickets for 24 runs and thus, eventually all of them consolidated and sealed India's victory by 23 runs. Also worths mention is G Gambhir's,Yuvraj Singh's,M S Dhoni's and Rohit Sharma's awe-inspiring catches which definitely made, winning easier for India. Mohammad Nabi(31for 17) scored the highest from team Afghanistan but unfortunately couldn't take their side to win.
