Royal Challengers had the team meeting at 5 PM yesterday. Our full team was on time. The chiefs were hovering around the area at that time and were called in by the coach Ray Jennings.
By the time we entered, everyone was seated comfortably. Most of them were wearing T-shirts and shorts. We three went and sat on the empty seats. The first looks we received were friendly and curious. Some of the guys had already seen us in the lobby during the day. Ray introduced us to the team and we were received warmly.
Ray informed that the meeting would be short and came to the point straight-away. The team’s performance in IPL 2009 was scrutinized briefly for points to improve on. I realized, how little of such analysis was known to me. It’s a different world guys and no matter how much we watch it on TVs and listen to the commentators' words, the real thing always has many subtle points which are hard to discern.
The team didn’t do a lot of strategy making in that meeting. It was more about planning the events of the next day: the exercise routine, the timings to leave for the match and the logistics.
Apart from Kumble and Kallis, Mark Boucher chipped in with encouraging words for the team. His message to the youngsters was “If ever you feel nervous then imagine what must be going on in the opposition’s minds. These aren’t familiar playing conditions and 50000 would be backing us against them”. YO fans, let’s make the impact louder than it sounds.
After the meeting, the team quickly dispersed and we had some casual discussions with Ray and Kumble. Ray now finds India to be his second home and his camaraderie with the support staff is amazing to say the least.
We rushed back to our rooms. Such precious moments must be shared with the fans at the earliest and Siva has uploaded quite a few of them on his page.
Gearing up for a very important day now. Much more to come and it can get only bigger from here. For those coming to stadium, look out for Sidharth, the Chief Fan. Check out his page for the cool things he has been planning for the match today.
