Group A
Central Districts Stags - NZL
The winners of the HRV Cup will be disappointed to not have the star player Ross Taylor playing for them. One can guage the impact Taylor has on the team only from the fact that he smashed a 30 ball 80 in the final to help Central Districts win the cup. As if that wasn’t enough Oram has been ruled out too. In the absence of Taylor, the batting will rely greatly on their captain Jamie How, the experienced Matthew Sinclair and Peter Ingram. In the bowling department Mason will spearhead the attack who will need a lot of support from George Worker whose spin bowling can be quite handy in SA conditions. It will be a huge test for the 18 yr old all rounder Ben wheeler who made his First Class debut only in 2010. He replaces the injured Oram in the side.

Overall Verdict - The team doesn’t have star players but have the ability to be competitive at this level. Jamie How will have to showcase transformational leadership skills if they are to have an impact in the Champions League.

Team’s Chances - 5/10

Chennai Super Kings
The winners of the IPL 3 make for a very interesting & dangerous side in the competition. The biggest plus of the team, their captain MS Dhoni. A star studded team looks well balanced. Inclusion of Justin Kemp should add a lot of value & strength to the squad. The batting has a mix of experience & youth but one must not forget there are a lot of Indian players in the batting lineup who are vulnerable when outside the sub-continent. This will be a concern for Dhoni & Co. Apart from Hayden & Hussey, the batting order lacks international experience & more importantly the technique to play in those conditions. Bowling looks quite formidable with the likes of Murali, Bollinger & Ashwin. Justin Kemp & Albie Morkel will be extremely handy as all rounders & will bring with them the local knowledge which might help Chennai adapt to those conditions well.

Players to watch out for - Morkel, Bollinger & Kemp

Overall Verdict - One of the most balanced sides lead by an equally composed leader. Will be fancying a semi final spot.

Team’s Chances - 7/10

Victoria Bushrangers - AUS

One of the most talked about teams in the competition & why not, they are by far the most dangerous team in the competition & will start off as favourites. They have been exceptionally consistent in the Australian Domestic T20 competition & have won the title 4 times since its inception in 2005. Unfortunately for them & fortunately for us (RCB) their regular captain Cameron White is not with them. In his absence the team will be led by the T20 Specialist David Hussey. Strong batting line up with the likes of international players like Hodge, Hussey & power hitter Finch all capable of turning the game at their own will. Bowling looks strong too with Nannes leading the attack alongwith Shane Harwood and Clint Mckay. Hussey provides them spin options and could be useful on slow wickets. Andrew Mcdonald is one of the finest allrounders in this version of the game and is equally good a bowler as a batsman.

Players to watch out for - Mcdonald, Nannes & Hussey

Overall Verdict - Will definitely be the team to watch out for. Will be quite shocking if they don’t make it to the semis. The burden of expectations most on them of all the teams.

Team’s Chances - 8/10

Warriors - SA
The local boys & winners of the Standard Bank Pro20 Series. Will enjoy home support and in their group the most well acquainted with the conditions. It is these factors that makes them a tough opponent. Led by Davey Jacobs, this team has quite a few international stars. The batting mainstay is Ashwell Prince who has loads of experience behind him. Colin Ingram is a decent striker of the ball as well. Guys like Kreusch & A Jacobs have been around since the beginning. Mark Boucher in the role of the wicket keeper adds depth to the batting. Bowling looks quite good as most of them have played at the international level. Ntini, Botha & Boje have tons of experience with them.

Players to watch out for - Ingram &  Botha

Overall Verdict - Familiarity with the home conditions, home support & presence of experienced international cricketers should keep them in good stead.

Team’s Chances - 7/10

Wayamba Elevens - SL
To their credit, one of the only 3 teams to have made it to the Champions League the second time. The winners of their domestic T20 competition, this side has been phenomenal & impregnable so far in the domestic circuit having never lost the competition since its beginning in 2007. The team has players who have played at the international level, Jayawardena being the biggest star of ‘em all. Led by Jehan Mubarak, the team has a decent batting lineup. Captain Mubarak, Jaywardena & Kulatunga have not only been amongst runs but runs at an amazing speed. Team’s bowling looks sharp as well with some of them playing for SL at the highest level. Mahroof is a premier bowler to have in the side. Mendis’ spin could be quite handy.Welegadara has been bowling with an exceptional economy rate of only 6.08. Perera & Udana have been amongst wickets as well with frugal economy rates. Herath provides another spin alternative. Lokurachchi plays the role of the allrounder.

Players to watch out for - Jayawaredena & Menids

Overall Verdict - The team has fair chances of being in the Top 2 in their group. Will be a tough opponent on slow wickets with that kind of a lineup.

Team’s Chances - 6/10

Group B
Guyana - WI

There is one thing that’s for sure with this team is that no matter whether they are winning or losing they will enjoy every bit of it and so will the spectators. The winners of their domestic competition, Guyana promises to be a very competitive T20 team. They could well surprise everyone with their performance like the T&T last year. Captain Sarwan, Dowlin, Chattergoon are their batting stars. Very young & exciting talent is their new find Jonathon Foo who can hit the ball a fair distance. The team’s bowling largely comprises spinners like Cush, Nagamootoo, Bishoo & Deonaraine. The team lacks experienced fast bowlers. E Crandon will be the pace spearhead who will be complemented by the d√©butante Paul Wintz.

Players to watch out for - Foo, E Crandon

Overall Verdict - Guyana have nothing to lose & must play with that kind of a spirit. Can be the party poopers in Group B. But who knows they can stun everyone just like T&T last year.

Team’s Chances - 5/10

Highveld Lions - SA

The runners up of the Standard Bank Pro20 Series and the local team are a decent side and should use the home conditions to their advantage. Led by A Petersen, the batting lineup has a couple of players who have represented SA at the highest level including the captain himself. The batting will revolve around N Mckenzie. Their biggest star in the batting is VB Jaarsveld who has consistently been their top run getter. Watch out for the young & exciting Jonathon Vandiar in the middle order. The bowling will be led by C Deacon, E Reilly and the dangerous all rounder Robert Frylinck who is also their leading wicket taker.Aaron Phangiso will add spin to the attack.

Players to watch out for - Jaarsveld, Vandiar & Frylinck

Overall Verdict - Can be quite dangerous in the home conditions. They will come hard at their opponents.

Team’s Chances - 6.5/10

South Australia Redbacks - AUS

The runners up of the KFC T20 competition, the Redbacks are not playing their full strength side. They will be quite disappointed to not have the services of the star T20 players like Afridi &  Kieron Pollard who will play for Mumbai Indian also in the same group. The team although does not have big stars but players who are quite competitive. Led by Graham Manou, team’s batting in the absence of their star players will rely heavily on Daniel Harris who is a powerful striker of the ball (SR-149.15) and also their top run getter. Others include Ferguson & captain Manou himself. Bowling will be spearheaded by Shaun Tait who is one of the fastest bowlers around. Cullen & O’Brien should support him well. Christian fills in the slot of allrounder who is a useful player to have in the side both with his batting & bowling abilities.

Overall Verdict - They will have to perform exceptionally well in absence of their key players. It will take a great effort from the captain himself to get the relatively inexperienced players to perform wel against the best T20 teams of the world.

Team’s Chances - 6/10

Mumbai Indians - IND

One of the most high profile teams in the competition, the Mumbai Indians will have huge support wherever they go largely because of presence of the batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar who is also their captain. Their morale will be quite high after a magnificent stint in the IPL 3 & indeed are one of the strongest teams in the league. Inclusion of Pollard adds great value. The batting lineup is decent & will revolve around Tendulkar. Jean Paul Duminy will be a great advantage in SA conditions and will lend solidarity to a relatively inexperienced middle order comprising Tiwari, Rayadu & Sathish. Not to forget the West Indian duo of Bravo & Pollard who can step up the run rate whenever needed. Bowling is lethal with the likes of Malinga, Bhajji & Zaheer all proven match winners.Local boy R Mclaren adds a lot of fire to the bowling attack. By far the best bowling attack of all the teams.

Overall Verdict - Will be fancying the semi final spot from their group. Will be a test for Indian domestic players in SA conditions. Inspirational leader in Sachin Tendulkar

Team’s Chances - 7.5/10

Royal Challengers Bangalore - IND

Our favourite RCB… Without any bias and prejudice, RCB is the hot favourite going into the league & in my opinion the strongest and the best team of all the teams playing the Champions League. On paper clearly the most experienced & devastating. The batting lineup boasts of stars like DRAVID, Kallis, Taylor, Uthappa, White, Kohli & Pandey. All of them except Pandey have played at the highest level of the game. It is a great blend of youth & experience and power hitters & grafters. Bowling quite decent as well. Steyn will lead the attack & with his pace should create problems for the batsmen. Praveen Kumar, a natural swing bowler is extremely useful on wickets conducive for swing. Will be a good test for R Vinay Kumar. Anil Kumble, the captain, is a legend. Kallis fills in the allrounder slot.

Players to watch out for - DRAVID, Taylor & Steyn

Overall Verdict - Will be a huge upset in the tournament if RCB doesn’t go to the semis. The team has done well in SA in the past & will be raring to go a step further than the last time.

Team’s Chances - 8.5/10
