The biggest mistake that RCB made was betting heavily on a few untested guys at the auction. RCB paid 1.6 million for Tiwari and 0.7 million for Pujara but got no returns. With 2.3 millions spent on the two, RCB had little budget left on day 2 of auction and missed out on buying bowlers. With that 2.3 million, we actually could have bought Steyn + Amit Mishra + Dravid + Mike Hussey. Thats the kind of opportunity we lost out on by buying Tiwari and Pujara

Another big mistake that RCB made was not retaining existing players. The retention rules wer : 1.8 million for 1st player, 1.4 million for 2nd, 0.9 million for third and 0.4 million for 4th. We retained Kohli but could have retained Uthappa, Kallis and Steyn for 2.7 million. Instead we bought 3 much inferior options - Tiwari, Zaheer and Dilshan for 3.1 million :(

Third mistake was not recruiting domestic cricketers aggressively. In last 3 years, except Mayank Agarwal there wasnt a single decent domestic uncapped player performing for us. Also we didnt scout for talent beyond Karnataka, Goa (our catchment area) - look at KKR who got Rajat Bhatia from Delhi, Iqbal Abdulla from Mumbai. We should have done the same.

Only saving grace for us was Gayle not being picked up by anyone during auctions. But for Gayle we would have been at the bottom of the table for all 3 years

Lessons to be learnt for next auction :
1. Its much cheaper to retain players than to buy them back from auction. So retain Kohli, Gayle, ABD, Vinay (the 4 most expensive players in RCB if they are to be put up for auction again)
2. Chinnaswami stadium is a batting paradise. So we need good bowlers to defend targets here. Buy at least one bowler whom the opposition would fear (someone like Steyn or Ajmal if Pak players are allowed)
3. Overseas players are handy if they are all rounders. Else difficult to fit them in (except for legends like Gayle, AB etc). So buy a few all rounders like Shakib, Bopara, Henriques etc
4. Assuning Kohli is reatined, we need at least one more solid capped India player. Go all out for Rahane/Dhawan
5. Scout aggressively for domestic talents. Instead of local competitions, ranji trophy, look for domestic performers in past IPL like Abu Nechim, Rajagopal Sathish, Stuart Binny etc

RCB think tank need to advice fans on the following -
1. Why did Mithun play against KKR whence its world know he is not a par bowler, considering its a slow pitch?
2. Why was Mithun persisted despite poor show?
3. Why was Henriques not used against KKR?

I think we fans constantly support but get no real purchase. The owners burn cash to no end either.

Its sad indeed….

We should get Devendra Bishoo a great bowler and won’t cost too much ! Better than Muralitharan !!!

Unlike RR or KXP, RCB isnt a for-profit franchisee. So they are likely to spend big and buy at least 2-3 overseas big stars (anyways they will retain Gayle, Kohli, AB and probably Vinay). So there’s no way one dimensional lesser-known overseas cricketers will get a place in final XIunless they are all rounders (case in point Pomersbach/Van der Wath/Langeveldt/Vandiar/Russouw hardly got a game). So if RCB buys Gayle, AB, Johnson, DuPlessis (say) then buying Bishoo will be a waste as he wont get aplace in final XI

Rather but some of the following value for money all rounders:
1. Shakib al Hasan
2. Roelof van der Merwe
3. Moises Henriques
4. Ryan McLaren
5. James Hopes
6. Ravi Bopara
7. Azhar Mehmood

Uthappa is really somebody who can complement Gayle appropriately. Even if he fails on odd occasions, he will make sure that balls are not lost, and more than that he can himself click on odd occasion scoring more runs. He can also keep wickets and hence can give the balance to our side. Unfortunately Gayle was not in our team when Uttappa was doing good job for RCB (even ABD was not there). Ideally I will prefer the below RCB team (if the owners try accordingly smile )

Gayle
Utthappa
Kohli
AB Divilliers
S Binny
Barnell (Hope he is excelled talent next year or we should find some really good proven talent)
Vinay
Zaheer
Steyn
Unadkat
M Karthik

Just raw assumption and slight hopes of getting back some players. But owners can go aggressive and pick some more fascinating talents next year retaining Gayle, Kohli, AB, Vinay

I think from next IPL, team Pune Warriors can be dissolved so that some of its players get back into their original sides. I think Yuvaraj will come to his own terms if he gets back to KXI. Similarly we can eye on Utthappa & Bhuvaneshwar Kumar.

Agree 100% to your views. Infact these are the mistakes that are quite evident to common people like us but the people who run the franchise does not seem to have the cricketing brain to realize these mistakes. Now with Anil Kumble joining MI whatever little cricketing brain we had in the team is gone for good. To start with they need to have some intelligent support staff with cricketing brain managing the team. So to begin with for next season do away with the likes of Venkatesh Prasad and Ray Jennings. Its not just about playing your best 11 but also about strategizing and showing flexibility as per the playing conditions and opposition.

I would suggest RCB management should be looking at grabbing Gary Kirsten as the head coach. Kirsten has just quit as the head coach for South Africa and wont mind taking up a lucrative deal with RCB. He knows the Indian Culture well and will do wonders to the team. Also its important they get a competant bowling coach some one like a Glenn Mcgrath or Wasim Akram who can make a difference to the weak RCB bowling.

Next is getting the right players and not to repeat the blunders from the past season like not retaining quality players like Styn, Uthhapa and Kallis. For next year they need to retain only ABD, Gayle and Kohli. In the auction they need to target getting atleat two quality fast bowlers who are world class and two quality Indian Spinners and a couple of world class allrounders. Also as mentioned by you while scouting for local Indian players they need to look beyond Karnataka and get some good Indian Batters who can support Gayle, Kohli and ABD.
