"Man's environment, the natural and the man-made, are essential to his well-being and to the enjoyment of basic human rights--even the right to life itself." The World today is celebrating International Human Rights Day. Do you know that right to a safe and healthy environment is considered one of the basic human fundamental rights? The 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment commonly called the Stockholm conference declared that “Humans have the fundamental right to freedom, equality and adequate conditions of life, in an environment of a quality that permits a life of dignity and well-being, and a solemn responsibility to protect and improve the environment for present and future generations”. We are aware of the harm we have caused to nature and the environment through our own activities. The whole world today is looking for solutions and mitigation options to fight the abuse we have caused to the environment. According to environmental justice foundation an estimated 12 million people live in poverty and by 2050 around 150 million people could be forced from their homes because of climate change, facing a future with no means to support themselves. Natural resources such as air, water, and land are fundamental to all life forms. But there are many people who do not even have access to clean air to breathe, safe drinking water or a hygienic place to live. There is no denying to the fact that the people who will suffer most due to climate change will be the poor and the indigenous people who have no option but to depend on the natural resources and the environment. By deteriorating the environment and depleting the natural resources further and further for our worldly needs we are infringing on the fundamental right of these poor and indigenous people to live. Realize the importance of clean and healthy environment for all the human beings on this Human Rights Day.
