Stadiums are being versatile as they no longer are being used just for sports but they are also used for concerts, or other events. The Olympic Games, the World cup, the European and FIFA World Cups and other major sports and athletic tournaments are periodically organised at locations around the world. The energy requirement is high due to this so there is an increasing need for total solutions that make ‘green’ stadiums possible.
Some of green solutions are as follows –

Use of renewable energy capabilities to operate the events

Comprehensive solid waste and recycling programs

Recovery and donation of unused prepared food

Donation of decorating materials to charitable organizations

Investment into a reforestation program that offsets the carbon generated by the event

Increased use of environment friendly cleaning and maintenance products

Increased use of recycled, chlorine-free paper for all publications and operations

Installation of solar energy panels to generate electricity for the team scoreboard

Environmental awareness and funding for environmental protection project

Use of 100 percent organic cotton shirts and recycled balls

Stadium should be an effective building with LEED certification

Use of drought-resistant plants that require less water for the landscaping

The construction material should be of recycled content and should be regionally produced to avoid long transportation

Setting up of numerous recycling bins throughout the stadium Some green initiatives have been taken in Dublin, Ireland where Aviva stadium has been built. The stadium redevelopment has been influenced with elements such as 1. Onsite crushing of the old stands for reuse as foundation material and recycling of steel rebar from the old stadium 2. Use of low CO2 concrete in construction 3. Rainwater harvesting 4. Heat recovery (from the diesel generators) 5. Waterless urinals 6. Energy and water meters 7. Acoustic Paneling 8. being a environmental engg i suggest that many of above measures should be enforced by Govt itself. EX- rainwater harvesting is done mandatory for residentials..!!
