Bangalore in earlier days was known as "The City of Lakes". Lakes were the lifeline of Bangalore, but now these are fast loosing water holding capacity, beauty and recharge capacity as there is an indiscriminate use of these lakes as dumping grounds. Increasing population in the recent decade has resulted in extension of residential areas on drained lakes. In 1960 there were 262 water bodies in Bangalore and the lakes started disappearing from 80’s. Today the figure has declined to about 81 of which 34 are recognized as live lakes. Many lakes have been converted into bus stands, stadiums etc. Some notable examples of these are –•    Shoolay lake - Football stadium•    Sampangi lake - Sports stadium•    Dharmanbudhi lake – Kempagowda Bus stand•    Challaghatta lake - Golf Course•    Koramangala lake - Residential layout•    Nagashettihalli lake - Space department•    Domlur lake - BDA layout•    Marenahalli lake - Residential layout•    Shivanahalli lake - Playground, Bus stand
The GoK set up Lake Development Authority (LDA) to work for the regeneration and conservation of lakes in Bangalore district as well as other cities. The LDA put in place a scheme for the development, beautification and maintenance of selected lakes in Bangalore. This is to be followed by beautification of lakes through: •    Landscaping, gardening, walkways and jogging path•    Foreshore and island development and Electrification for illumination •    Creation of tree parks, Rock gardens, Fountains, Children play area •    Eco friendly water sports and restaurantsRCB wants to contribute to save the lakes… Let us know your ways and ideas how do you want to conserve the lakes. If all the RCB fans get together and do something, we can really save the lakes… Let’s take an initiative from our side to save the lakes of Bangalore and again make it ‘The City of Lakes” royal challengers Kempagowda Bus stand on Dharmanbudhi Lake royal challengers
