PHASE 1 : Prashanth Muralidhar 's review for rc's performance
It was the start of IPL3 but the RCB fans and players particularly skipper Anil Kumble did not forget the loss in the finals of IPL 2 from having controlled the game for 35 overs. So the team management bought 2 very good players not by name but their record suggested it.They were Eoin Morgan who recently burst onto the world stage and Steven Smith who is a useful all rounder for NSW . After these 2 buys RCB became much more strong and their batting line-up would envy anybody. RCB's IPL 2010 campaign started against KKR whom they faced in first ever match in IPL history.KKR skipper Sourav won the toss and elected to bowl on a slow Eden wicket. Rather surprisingly RCB opted to open with Kallis and Goswami. Langeveldt KKR's new ball bowler greeted pint sized Goswami with bouncers and his tactics to whack it by moving outside the line of the ball din't work and Goswami din't stay long. Then came our Karnataka new batting hero Manish. He scored a duck n another young player Kohli followed him. He too din't stay long.By the time powerplay got over RCB was struggling @ 24/3 in 6 overs. Some great bowling by Langeveldt and Kartik did it for KKR. Morgan then made his first runs in his IPL career by hitting a six over long off and showed the signs of a man in form. but his over ambitious reverse sweep did not come off and he was bowled by canny Kartik. Then walked "The Wall" Dravid who is not new to such situations. He and Kallis did some repair work caused by some poor batting display by young guns of RCB.Dravid was done in by a slower ball by Matthews unlucky for RCB.Kallis stood like a rock @ the other end watching wickets tumbe @ other end. After Dravid's dismissal walked Robbie who wanted to erase the memories of his IPL 2 performance and in particular the finals of IPL 2. He scored just 20 and struggled all the way through. He too got out to Matthews. Then few boundaries by Kallis ensured that RCB would reach 135 in their quota of 20 overs. KKR opened their batting with experienced Brad Hodge and young gun Tiwary . They gave a flying start to KKR . RCB held back our spearhead Steyn and opened bowling with PK and Kallis. By the time Steyn was introduced KKR had gained momentum. Our RCB's last trump card was skipper Kumble who was also taken for runs. by the end of 6 overs KKR were making merry and had scored 61 without losing wicket. it was a one sided affair from then on. KKR cruised to victopry with 7 wickets to spare. After having lost the opening match RCB was under pressure to get of the mark in the points table. Action moved on to our very own home ground for RCB M.Chinnaswamy stadium. The home support was a significant booster for RCB which did wonders for their morale. The pitch was a belter and toss was won by Sanga who was recently named as skipper of KX1P amid some controversies. RCB made some significant changes to their line-up by dropping Goswami and Van Der Merwe. RCB opted a 4 prong pace attack. Steyn had the new ball in his hand unlike the first match. KX1P opened with Bopara and unknown talent Bisla. Both the openers were treated with short pitch deliveries by express bowler Steyn . Initially Bisla struggled to face those. But as he spent time @ the crease . The pitched became very easy to bat on. The runs were scored @ hemorrhaging pace. Kumble also could do nothing. He was so desperate for a breakthrough that he even introduced Kohli into the attack. Eventually Bisla fell to Kallis after having a big opening partnership of 129. Then came in Yuvraj do increase the scoring rate. But he couldn't do much and fell very next over to Steyn. Followed Yuvi was SL's ex-skipper Mahela, a canny batsman. He and Bopara scored very quick runs towards the end .Mahela was @ his cheeky best. KX1P put on a daunting 203/3 on board. The match was still on. RCB wanted a great start and it was promptly given by Manish and Kallis. They scored 60 in first 6 overs. Manish was in murderous mood and even Kallis carreid his good work from Eden. Pandey fell to Chawla but not before giving RCB a great strt of 74 on less than 8 overs. In came Robbie. Required rate was over 10. There were 2 quite overs although Kallis scored a six in those overs. The giant was sleeping till now. All of a sudden Robbie exploded so too the crowd @ Chinnaswamy. 100 was up inside 11 overs . required rate was stil hovering around 10. Robbie had a flurry of boundaries which included a 25 runs over from Sree most of them scored by Robbie and reached 50 in just 18 balls, the second fastest in IPL history. Soon Robbie got out trying to clear the boundary once again of Bipul. 61 was required of 6 overs. A set Kallis was joined by Kohli. Then they wanted some big overs but there were 2 godd overs by Bipul and Bopara.3 overs 33 runs and RCB could not afford to have 1 more quiet over. so Kallis took it upon himself and scored 23 runs of Bipul which included 3 sixes and a 4. this over turned the tables and only 11 was required of last 2 overs with was scored without anymore twists. Kallis was magnificent scoring 89 off 55 and rightly earned MOM. RCB opened it's account with 2 points. After haing chased brilliantly over 20 runs RCB were to play RR who came of an extraordinary match against MI where Yusuf Pathan scored a 37 ball 100 and almost single handedly chased MI's stiff target of 212. So RCB had a great pace attack @ it's disposal . So they prepared a wicket with plenty of carry . RCB won the toss and asked RR to bat first. RCB had a strategy to use short balls against Indian batsmen. RR had a quiet start and did not get enough boundaries . RCB opened bowling with Steyn and PK. RR scored 27/0 in first 5 overs. Then Kallis was introduced into the attack and he picked up N.Ojha with a short one. This opened floodgates for RR. Then Lumb was foxed by an Anil Kumble's googly and was stumped. Then soon Jhunjhunwala was out to Kallls again a short delivery. Then came man of the moment the big hitting Pathan . Soon Steyn was brought back into attack . He and Kallis bowled a lot of short deliveries and Pathan could not get rid of it. Even Vinay's bouncers also created problems to Pathan. As soon as Vinay varied from the short length Pathan sent 2 huge sixes. So Kumble promptly kept the short stuff going untill Pathan's dismissal courtesy a run-out by Kohli. During Pathan's stay a couple of chances were put down by RCB fielders but that did not prove costly. Then PK came back into the attack. He took the wicket of Martyn who was lost in this IPL and clearly showed it was not for him. The very next ball Narwal was caught by Pandey of PK done in by short ball. PK on a hattrick and Dogra was bowled by a beauty from PK> PK first RCB bowler to take a hattrick in IPL. Eventually RR crawled to 92/10 inside 20 overs. RCB bowled according to a plan . 92 off 20 overs was not a big ask but still those runs have to be soored. RCB chase was heped by some wayward bowling by Tait and Morne Morkel who gavce away 44 runs in 4 overs. Match over , RCB cruised to victory in style by having all 10 wickets in it's bag. A record in terms of balls remaining, RCB won by 10 wickets and 56 balls to spare ,third time a team won by 10 wickets and second highest number of balls remaining. Kallis earned MOM for taking 2 wickets and scoring 44 runs and not dismissed in IPL 3. RCB moved away from home to Brabourne stadium to tame MI in their own den.MI in great form but also RCB.it was a table toppers clash.MI ahad just tamed DD by 99 runs. Steyn sent back Jayasuriya early trapping him plumb in front. But runs kept coming from Sachin's blade.Steyn was @ the receiving end of Sachin's flick. Soon Kallis tok the wicket of leeper Tare. Then came Tiwary. Both Tiwary n Sachin tried to build a partnership.Soon Kumble's googly consumed Tiwary. Then came a decisive over from Vinay. He took the wixkets of Sachin,Bravo n Rayadu in a single over whihc turned the match in favour of RCB.From then on it was RCB all the way. MI crawled to 155 in 20 overs. It was a small target but MI had a very bowling attack. Zak n Malinga opened the bowling for MI. The RCB openers Kallis n Pandey looked comfortable and attacked the ball whenever a chance was offered. The 2 all rounders from WI Bravo and Pollard were taken to cleaners. By the time the first wicket of RCB fell it was 85 in 10 overs. Again Robbie scored a big ix n few boundaries .Kallis scored a 50 nce again and carried RCB home unbeaten. it was kallis's fourth innings in IPL 2010 and was yet to be dismissed.Again he was the MOM. RCB back to bangalroe to play against CSK.RCB lost the toss and were asked to bat first. after a few edgy shots Kallis for the first time was dismissed in IPL 2010. Then murali took the wickets of struggling Pandey and Rahul Dravid Then RCB was in trouble. The 2 younbg guns of RCB Robbie and Kohli went on damage control mode. When it was around 15 overs Kohli exploded by hitting a six . CSK dropped Robbie twice which proved them very costly. Robbie scored 24 of 18th over from Balaji and took RCB to a commanding 171/5 in 20 overs. Robbie scored his IPL best of 68 off 38 balls with 6 sixes. Robbie was @ his best. Rcb could not relax as cSK had Hayden n Raina in their ranks who could single handedly win games. So picking up wickets was very crucial. As always PK n Steyn opened the bowling.Though they picked only 1 wicket both Haydos n george Bailey found difficult to score runs off.So @ the end of 6 overs CSK were 29/1.Mongoose dint work for Haydos nd he was run out for painful 32 while bailey was dismissed in the same over. By this time CSK had already lost the match and could never come back. Some boundaries came from Badri @ the end but tat was too late n little for CSK. CSK eventually lost the match by 36 runs and Vinay picked up 4 wickets. But the man who won the match for RCB was Robbie n he was also MOM The RCB fans were on a roll n so too was RCB riding high on confidence having won 4 matches on trot. Their next opponents were Daredevils. kumble won the toss and elected to bowl.Warner gave DD a flying start scoring 33 off just 14 balls. The platform was laid for a strong batting unit of DD to build a big score.Rightly so DD did it in style.De Villiers and new boy Kedar Jadhav consolidated their position scoring quickly without too many risks. RCB's bowling was wayward.Kumble was economical but couldnt pick up a single wicket. DeVilliers socred 45 but the man who stole the show for DD was pint sized Jadhav who scored 50 off 29 balls. This took DD to 183/4 in 20 overs. RCb believed they could chase coz of having a batting order which had depth and quality.Kallis and Pandey started off cautiously scoring just 45 in first 6 overs. But RCB couldnt really kick on from there and by the time first wicket fell it was 71 in 9 overs. The run rate was 10 n Kallis got out. Then Robbie came in,but Pandey followed Kallis in very next over. Asking rate kept on increasing and put tremendous pressure of RCB batsmen. The batting of RCb flopped with Robbie,Dravid,Morgan all falling cheaply.Kohli was the only batsmn who scored some fast runs and was in vain. Kohli saw that RCB posted a decent score so that their NRR was not affected much.Jadhav was MOM for his innings of great maturity. RCb having lost to DD in their own backyard had to face CSK again. After a good 6 days break RCB looked refreshed ,Kumble won the toss and batted first.Boucher n Morgan were dropped.KP n White came in their place,Robbie was the keeper. Pandey got out early.Robbie in @ 3. He scored osme quick runs with a couiple of 6's and a boundary.RCB had a good start inspite of losing Pandey early.RCB scored 52/1 in first 6 overs. Jakati came into the attack and picked up the danger man Robbie. Big wicket . Kohli came in @ 4. He and Kallis steadied the ship.Kohli went on to step up the run rate.Kohli was out trying to clear a Jakati full toss. it was the 16th over of the innings and the turning point of the match.RCB were going well @ 115/2 in 15 overs.Jakati picked up Kohli and Kallsi unable to score runs tried to steal a single n was run out.to RCB's shock 16th over was a maiden n 17th over by Murali yielede 2 runs. These 2 overs turned the match around. Though Kallis scored 52 he took 49 balls. Finally RCB managed to score 161/4 courtesy some fireworks @ the end by White n KP. After posting only 161 RCB was always 10 to 15 runs short. But a good start by PK n Steyn could turn the match on. Hayden struggling with his mongoose gave a chance for RCB. But all of a sudden Vijay stole the show.He showed that he was the man for CSK by scoring 24 runs of a single over from PK inb his second over.Though Hayden struggled Vijay scored @ a very good pace.By the time powerplay was over CSK were 56/0 in 6 overs. Enter Kumble n he took the wicket of Hayden. But Raina @ 3 gives support to Vijay. Vjay scores a magnificent 50 of just 29 balls. Then kumble introduced KP into the attack to get a breakthrough as his pacers were taken to cleaners by Vijay. Vijsy scored 2 huge sixes off KP but finally KP had a last laugh by getting the wicket of Vijay. So Kumble decided to attack n apply pressure on CSK batsmen ,. He brings himself into the attack with a slip and Steyn brought back @ the other end. Raina well settled doesnt take many risks and rotates the strike. But Dhoni succumbs under pressure and Steyn picks up Dhoni.Soon morkel is bowled by Kallis.Match again shifts to balance. But Raina @ the crease was an advantage for CSK. 16 off last 2 overs.Vinay bowls good 4 balls but 5th ball goes for a boundary scored by Badri. But their is again a twist in the tale.Vinay gets Badri. 10 more off 7 balls. Vinay to the shock of all RCB fans n players gives width to Raina who wallops the ball over cover for a 6 n moreover it's a no-ball. free hit. All over for RCB. so match over and CSK wins by 5 wickets, M.Vijay get MOM for his awesome knock of 78 off 39 balls.
