Luke Pomersbach is a product of the T20 generation of batsmanship, a brutal southpaw with a gift
for playing aggressive, momentum-seizing innings, and an extremely athletic fielder, all qualities
which are highly valued in this format. His simple technique with an expertise and eagerness of
playing the short ball add to his worth on Indian pitches.
Pomersbach made a strange debut for Australia in December 2007. He was called up to replace an
injured Brad Hodge in a T20 game against NZ just before the game was scheduled to begin. Luckily
for him, he had planned to watch the match at the ground and was parking his car when he got the
call. Pomersbach went on to make 15 from 7 balls with a six as Australia crushed NZ by 54 runs.
Also known as 'Pomers', he has had a few disciplinary run-ins which led to him being banned
indefinitely by WACA in August 2009. However, the ban was soon lifted and he has been solid since
his return to first class cricket in January 2010.
Luke Pomersbach was picked up by Kings XI Punjab in the first two seasons of the IPL for whom he
had a brilliant run in 2008 when he made 152 in five innings with only one dismissal.
Pomersbach was picked up by RCB for the 2011 IPL where he played 5 games, scoring 51 runs in 4
innings at a strike rate of 110.5, batting up and down the order, coming in at the start or with just a
few balls to go, depending on what the team wanted. 5 catches also highlighted his superb fielding
prowess.
RCB Highlights
RCB vs CSK, First Qualifier, Mumbai
Chris Gayle had departed early and Virat Kohli had assumed the duty of anchoring the innings but
he kept losing partners at the other end. Pomersbach entered in the 11th over and immediately set
about hitting the leather off the ball. His 29 off 18 balls with two 4s and 6s each were a beautiful
display of power hitting which took RCB from a sub 150 total to a hefty 175.
RCB vs MI, Second Qualifier, Chennai
Malinga held a screamer to dismiss Luke Pomersbach for 4 off 4, a failure in T20. Pomersbach
decided to reply in kind. He held three catches that night as RCB defended their total, finishing with
a skier which went high and twirled and swirled before landing in Pomersbach's palms very close to
the boundary, the catch to dismiss Malinga.
