Murali Kartik is a classical left arm spinner. His 17 wickets for his Ranji team Railways in the 1999/00 season and 18 wickets for India A on the tour of West Indies in the same season earned him a call up to the Indian Test squad.
Kartik’s best Test performance came in 2004/05 against Australia, where his 7 wicket match haul helped India defend a small total of 107 and earned him the Man of the Match award. His all round performance of 6 wickets for 27 runs along with a crucial 9th wicket partnership of 52 with Zaheer Khan in the 7th ODI against Aussies in 2007/08 won the match for India and him the Man of the Match award. He always played under the shadow of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, not getting too many chances for India.
Kartik played for different teams in English County cricket, among them Lancashire, Middlesex, Somerset and he currently plays for Surrey. His most successful stint came with Middlesex between 2007-2009, picking up 100 wickets in 29 first class matches and taking 14 wickets in the 2008 Twenty20 Cup which Middlesex won.
