AB de Villiers lights up tour game
South Africa’s 2 day, 14 players per side tour game against Derbyshire County Cricket Club was lit up by AB de Villiers’s sprightly 97 before he retired out on Friday.
Derbyshire won the toss at the County Ground in Derby and put SA in to bat first. They had early success with the wicket of Jacques Rudolph (15) before Hashim Amla (42) accelerated brilliantly in a 54 run partnership with JP Duminy.
Duminy (69) was then joined by de Villiers (97 off 96b, 4x16, 6x2) and they added 157 for the third wicket before AB retired to give the other batsmen a go. Faf du Plessis (68*) and Albie Morkel (49*) contributed quick runs as SA declared their first innings on 365/4.
Ross Whiteley (51) was Derby’s sole saving grace while SA’s Lonwabo Tsotsobe ran through them, taking 4/45. He had support from Vernon Philander (2/31), Imran Tahir (2/35) and Morne Morkel (1/23) as Derby declared on 174/9.
SA’s bowlers batted ahead of their batsmen in their second innings which meant AB did not bat a second time. Philander hit 68* with support from Dale Steyn (34) as SA declared on 168/7 in their second innings, the match ending in a draw.
