AB de Villiers Nominated For South African Cricketer Of The Year Award
The Protea star batsman AB de Villiers heads the list of nominees for the 2013 Cricket South Africa professional awards. The other 4 nominees for the South African Cricketer of the Year award are Dale Steyn, Hashim Amla, JP Duminy and Quinton de Kock.
AB de Villiers, who made the headlines last week for his blitzkrieg 89* off 41b for Royal Challengers Bangalore, has also been nominated for the Castle Lager Test Cricketer of the Year and Castle Lager One Day International Cricketer of the Year awards. This is the first occasion on which de Villiers has been nominated for the prestigious South African Cricketer of the Year award.
Even by his own high standards, the 30-year old South African has had an incredible year. Rated among the best batsmen of the current era, he sits comfortably on the top of the ICC test rankings and is ranked the second best ODI batsman in the ICC rankings, only behind Virat Kohli. de Villiers was South Africa’s leading run scorer in both the Test & One Day formats of the game, although he did not contribute in the same way in the T20 format, his whirlwind innings off 69 off just 28 balls against England in World T20 was important in South Africa’s progress to the top four of the tournament.
The awards cover the period between May 1, 2013 and April 30, 2014 in which two ICC events -- Champions Trophy and World Twenty20 -- were held.
The Cricket South Africa (CSA) professional awards will be announced at a banquet in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 4th June.
