AB hundred can’t stop Cobras
AB de Villiers scored a ton for the Titans in their Momentum One Day Cup semi final loss against the Cape Cobras at Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday.
After winning the toss and choosing to field first, the Cobras were put ahead by Dale Steyn who dismissed both the openers to leave the Titans stuttering at 18/2 in the 5th over. de Villiers steadied things with a 49 run 3rd wicket partnership with Jacques Rudolph (24) and a 120 run 5th wicket partnership with Farhaan Behardein.
The slow wicket presented enough run scoring challenges for batsmen and Steyn’s charge doubled the pressure but AB patiently built his innings. His 50 came off 65 deliveries with just 5 fours but he picked up the pace on the way to his ton, bringing it up off 119 deliveries with 10 fours.
AB set up a good platform for Titans with the score at 205/4 in the 43rd over but his run out (102, 123b, 4x11) in the over saw the team lose its way. Steyn returned to knock the wind out of the chase, taking 3 wickets in one over and ending with 5/45 as the Titans were restricted to 241/9 in their 50 overs.
The successful Cape Cobras chase was built around a 109 run partnership for the fifth wicket between Yasin Vallie (60) and Ontong (82*). They enjoyed greater support from the rest of their line up though as the Cobras overhauled the target in just 46.3 overs to seal a 3 wicket win and enter the final of the tournament.
