AB lights up rain hit game
AB de Villiers smashed 30 off 13 balls and chipped in with a run out and catch to help South Africa win their rain hit 2012 ICC World Twenty20 game against Sri Lanka in Hambantota on Saturday.
Heavy rain delayed the start of play to the extent that it was reduced to a 7 overs a side game. Hashim Amla (16) gave South Africa a good start after they were put in by Australia, taking them to 27 by the time he was dismissed in the 3rd over. AB de Villiers then provided a spectacular boost, adding 38 with Faf du Plessis (13) in just 3 overs, combining swift running with hits to the boundary. AB was dismissed for 30 (13b, 4x1, 2x6) at the end of the 6th over and SA finished at a score of 78/4.
Sri Lanka’s reply started poorly as Tillakaratne Dilshan was run out without facing a ball as AB de Villiers again produced a superb athletic display at the wicketkeeper’s end. South Africa’s bowlers were hard to put away and the dismissal of Mahela Jayawardene (4) further dented Sri Lanka’s chances in the 2nd over. Sangakkara’s dismissal, caught behind by de Villiers off Kallis in the 5th over meant SL had no chance of fighting back.
SL finished on 46/5 in their 7 overs, giving SA an easy 32 run win and AB de Villiers won the Man of the Match award for his all round display.
