Abhimanyu Mithun named in Australia squad
Royal Challengers Bangalore speedster Abhimanyu Mithun has been named as the replacement for Praveen Kumar in India’s Test squad for the upcoming tour of Australia. Mithun is currently with the team playing in the ODI series against West Indies and will leave for Australia on December 12th from Chennai.
Mithun will join fellow RCB players Virat Kohli and Zaheer Khan who were named in the squad earlier. Mithun has had an inconsistent Test career, making his debut in Sri Lanka in 2010 where he impressed with his work ethic and lower order batting but took only 6 wickets, not enough to retain his place.
He was again called up to the Test squad for the tour of West Indies earlier this year where he played in the drawn second Test at Bridgetown, taking a match haul of 3/84. Dropped from the squads for the tour of England and WI’s tour of India, Mithun returned to the ODI team when Praveen Kumar pulled out with a rib injury. Subsequent scans showed a serious injury, prompting the selectors to find a replacement for Kumar for India’s tour of Australia.
The 22 year old Abhimanyu Mithun has done consistently well for Karnataka on the domestic circuit but wickets have evaded him in International Cricket. Deservingly, he has yet another chance to prove himself in Australia where the conditions will assist him and he will want to cement his place in the squad there.
