AB’s New Zealand tour begins with loss
Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman AB de Villiers began his country South Africa’s tour of New Zealand with a 6 wicket defeat in the first T20I at Wellington on Friday.
Inserted to bat first at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington after NZ's stand in skipper Brendon McCullum won the toss, South Africa lost wickets regularly, going from 24/0 to 52/4 over 5 fruitless overs. South African skipper AB de Villiers was the fourth wicket to fall, going for 8 when Martin Guptill pulled off a sensational catch at short cover to dismiss de Villiers off Ronnie Hira.
JP Duminy and Justin Ontong then strung together a decent partnership before Albie Morkel and Johan Botha took SA to 147/6, a middling score giving the SA bowlers something to defend.
New Zealand’s reply revolved around Martin Guptill’s thunderous 78* off 55 balls with five fours and four sixes. The rest of the batsmen chipped in with their contributions as NZ reached 148/4 in just 19.2 overs, consigning SA to a 6 wicket loss.
