Aim was to stay till the end: de Villiers

After the victory, the strategy for a controlled start by the star of Team Royal Challengers, AB de Villiers was revealed in the post match press conference. De Villiers who rattled the Kochi Tuskers with a quickfire unbeaten 54 off 40 deliveries revealed that his strategy was to stay till the end and to guide the team to victory. “The decision was taken at the start of my innings, as there are lots of youngsters in the side who I thought may not be able to handle the pressure in the death overs.” Till the 18th over, de Villiers was on 35 in 36 deliveries but a three towering sixes in the Gomez over not only dashed Kochi’s hopes but also proved who was in charge of the chase. At the start of that over, Royal Challengers needed 33 off the last 3 but de Villiers’ charge check-mated Kochi with more than an over to spare.

“The youngsters in our team can really hit the ball well, but I wanted to have a calming effect on them. So I was talking with them all the time and it showed in our game,” a confident de Villiers said. “In this format, confidence and momentum are the two big ingredients of success; I believe we have them both as it is always good to start a tournament with a win.”

Brushing aside any theory that the bowling of Royal Challengers is a little suspect, de Villiers said, “We have one of the best bowlers in the world in the form of Zaheer. Anybody can get thrashed in a T20, but the way he came back in his second spell proved his class. We also have lot of variety in our spin department. Vettori is one of the best spinners as he proved in the match and we also have off-spinners and leg spinners. So there is absolutely nothing to worry about the bowling.”
