Barnwell double takes Guyana to surprise win
Christopher Barnwell bowled a superb last over, picking up two wickets while defending 10 runs to deliver a 5-run win for the Guyana Amazon Warriors against the Jamaica Tallawahs at Kingston on Thursday in the Carribean Premier League.
After being sent in to bat first by Jamaica, Guyana got off to a decent start with their three top batsmen reaching double figures. Lendl Simmons (30), Martin Guptill (39) and James Franklin (40) made good starts though they weren’t able to convert it into big scores. A middle-order collapse ensued to put Guyana in trouble, keeping them to just 139/6 in 20 overs.
Jamaica’s reply began with a typical Chris Gayle knock as he smashed 3 fours and 2 sixes on his way to a quick 43. His opening partner Ahmed Shehzad (3) went early but Chadwick Walton’s cameo (36) came in handy as he ably supported Gayle before falling to Steven Jacobs. Despite Gayle’s dismissal, Jamaica were in a comfortable position with 25 needed off the last 3 overs with 6 wickets in hand.
However, Sunil Narine (1/10) bowled a shrewd 18th over, getting rid of Jacques Rudolph (18) and conceding just 2 runs. Krishmar Santokie gave away 13 runs in the penultimate over but got rid of Andre Russell (14). Jamaica went into the final over need 10 runs to win the game. Bowling his first over in the match, Barnwell (2/4) was nerveless, removing Vernon Philander (1) on the very first ball and David Bernard (0) on the third while only conceding 4 runs.
The win gave Guyana Amazon Warriors 2 points, taking their total tally to 8 points in the Caribbean Premier League.
