Champions League and Table toppers: RC way

Champions League and Table toppers: RC way

Its like catching two birds with one chaff. Or how about, having your cake and eating it too!

The annihilation of Chennai meant topping the table and an automatic qualification for the Champions League. This is the third straight year Team Royal Challengers qualified for the Champions, a record of sorts. But more importantly currently, RC has topped the group and meets Chennai again the first Qualifier. That sets up our possible march to a second IPL finals.

It was made possible by a wonderful cohesive bowling effort by the bowlers spearheaded Zaheer and Vettori, a near perfect fielding with no major mis-fields and holding onto the skiers meant Chennai was restricted to a mere 128. On a perfect batting strip at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, the low target was just a walk in the park for Gayle and company.

But there was a small hitch and a big surprise when Chennai skipper Dhoni produced a magical stumping to script AB de Villiers return to the hut as early as the 3rd ball of the RC chase. A potential danger looming in, Virat Kohli, then accompanies Gayle to script a counter recovery plan to see RC through. No further damage for the victors, except what was inflicted upon the visitors by a clinical team RC display and a patient Gayle.

For the non-believers, Gayle played a patient knock to remain unbeaten on 75 in 18 overs of RC's chase. Even though he achieved a strike rate of 150 in this match, but Gayle has set his own benchmark for this IPL. A tournament strike rate of 187 and an average of 85.16 have helped Gayle amass 511 runs in only 9 matches. The Orange Cap has been rightfully proclaimed by the Calypso King. More is awaited, he promises. Hats off to the giant, or should we say, Orange Caps off to Gayle!

The batting was near perfect, but the bowling was a revelation on a pitch which was batting dodo. Vettori thought of chasing somewhat near to 180, but instead pinned Chennai to 128, a whopping 50 runs saving. Those runs were worth its weight in gold which was earned by the bowlers. Only 2 Chennai batsmen could cross double figures. One of was skipper Dhoni (70) who singlehandedly took the responsibly of taking the fight head on.

Zaheer had the most telling effect on the Chennai team by taking out early Michael Hussey and Suresh Raina, the most dangerous of Chennai men. Vettori did the same to the middle orders and it was game over for Chennai in this match.
