Chris Gayle powers Jamaica to maiden CPL title
Jamaica Tallawahs sealed a 7-wicket win over Guyana Amazon Warriors to clinch the inaugural Caribbean Premier League at Trinidad on Sunday.
After being put in to bat first, Guyana lost opener William Perkins (14) in the 5th over, followed by Tillakaratne Dilshan (0) in the 7th without much on board. Lendl Simmons (40) held the innings from one end, in partnership with Denesh Ramdin (29) from the other. Nikita Miller (1/27) then provided a breakthrough, getting rid of the settled Simmons. Chris Gayle (1/42) dismissed Ramdin and Guyana were soon crumbling under pressure. David Bernard (2/18) wreaked further havoc as the Guyana innings folded up for 128 in 20 overs.
In response, Jamaica appeared to be on the attack from the very first ball, with Chadwick Walton scoring a quick 13 off 9 deliveries (1x4, 1x6) before he was trapped plumb in front by Dilshan (1/32). Chris Gayle kept the momentum going, top scoring with an unbeaten 47. Kumar Sangakkara (13) departed to Christopher Barnwell (1/26), followed by Jermaine Blackwood (3) who was caught and bowled by Lasith Malinga (1/28). Andre Russell came up with an important cameo (33* off 18 balls, 5x5, 1x6), adding 62 runs for the 4th wicket with Gayle. The target was chased down in just 17.3 overs, handing Jamaica Tallawahs a huge 7-wicket victory.
