Dilshan fifty propels Sri Lanka to series win
An unbeaten 59 by Tillakaratne Dilshan steered Sri Lanka to an 8-wicket win over New Zealand in the 2nd T20I at Pallekele on Thursday.
New Zealand were put in to bat first by Sri Lanka who won the toss at the Pallekele International Cricket stadium. The Kiwis got off to a shaky start, losing opener Hamish Rutherford (3) early on. Anton Devcich (30) played a small cameo and revived his side with Tom Latham (20). However, a couple of wickets later the visitors were in spot of bother. By the 15th over, they were 93/5.
Luke Ronchi's unbeaten 25-ball 34 set the tone and New Zealand were headed towards a respective total. He was ably supported by Nathan McCullum (26), who chipped with 3 fours before being run-out. At the end of 20 overs, New Zealand finished with 142/7 on the board.
In response, Sri Lanka lost Mahela Jayawardene (3) in the 2nd over, but the hosts bounced back with a 96-run partnership between Tillakaratne Dilshan (59) and Kusal Perera (57). The duo did the bulk of the scoring, as Kumar Sangakkara finished the chase with a 17-ball 20 inside 18 overs.
Sri Lanka sealed the 2-match series 1-0, after the 1st T20I was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
