Dilshan’s ton helps SL clinch 4th ODI against SA
Tillakaratne Dilshan’s unbeaten century guided Sri Lanka to an 8-wicket victory over South Africa in the fourth ODI, thereby giving them an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series. Ajantha Mendis (4/51) and Lasith Malinga (3/52) shone with the ball, restricting South Africa to a total of 238.
After electing to bat first and losing Quinton de Kock early, the visitors were provided relief by Hashim Amla and JP Duminy who added 101 for the 2nd wicket in just 18.1 overs. Returning from an injury, Amla went on to score 77 before Dilshan made an impact for the first time in the game, trapping him plumb LBW. The off-spinner also picked up another important wicket, that of his RCB teammate and South African captain Ab de Villiers (4). The SA middle order struggled against the quality spin bowling, Ajantha Mendis ending with figures of 4/51. Thanks to JP Duminy’s well grafted innings of 97, the Proteas reached a decent total of 238.
Sri Lanka’s response to South Africa’s total was aided by a magnificent hundred from the experienced Tillakaratne Dilshan (115*, 130b 16x4) who ensured his team got home comfortably. Kumar Sangakkara provided able support with his 91, adding 184 with Dilshan for a record 2nd wicket partnership to help Sri Lanka chase down the target in just 44 overs.
Sri Lanka clinched the 5-match ODI series 3-1 by virtue of this win, sealing the series with a game in hand. The final ODI will be played at Colombo on July 31st.
