Gayle blasts WI to 56 run win in Florida T20I
Chris Gayle struck a belligerent 85* off 32 balls as he and Kieron Pollard pulverized New Zealand for a 56 run West Indies win in their first T20I encounter at Lauderhill, Florida in the USA on Saturday.
A sedate start after being put in to bat first by New Zealand saw Gayle on just 7* when his opening partner Dwayne Smith was dismissed for 17 with the score on 27 after 4 overs. He picked up his scoring with no.3 batsman Johnson Charles in a 55 ball 2nd wicket partnership for 74 runs.
Then Charles went for 24 in the 14th over, Kieron Pollard walked in and the two batsmen raised hell, slamming an unbeaten 108 run 3rd wicket partnership off just 43 balls. Gayle’s languid 50 came off 42 balls but his next 35 runs came off just 10 deliveries as he ended on 85* off 52b (7x4, 5x6). Pollard’s frenetic 50 came off 24 deliveries and he made 63* of 29b (5x4, 5x6) as WI posted a massive 209/3 in their 20 overs.
West Indies bowlers lacked the discipline upfront as NZ’s openers Guptill and Nicol added 38 for the first wicket in just 4 overs. That was the best it would get for the Kiwis though. They had been reduced to 9 men as Ross Taylor and Ronnie Hira hurt their shoulder and finger respectively while fielding. Jacob Oram too injured his knee yet came out to bat. Rob top scored with 32 while Sunil Narine took 3/34 as NZ were kept to 153 in 18.3 overs, sealing a massive 56 run win.
