Harshal takes fiver in Ranji draw
Karnataka’s batsmen batted out a draw against Haryana in their Ranji game at KSCA Cricket ground in Hubli on Tuesday after Harshal Patel’s 5/79 had them facing an innings defeat at one point.
Haryana had piled up 587/9 before declaring in their first innings, having been put in to bat first by Karnataka. The home team was missing Vinay Kumar, injured and Abhimanyu Mithun who replaced the injured Vinay in India’s national T20I squad for the games against England. The bowlers still managed to reduce Haryana to 168/7 before Amit Mishra (202) and Jayant Yadav put up a record 392 run stand for the eight wicket.
Only Kunal Kapoor (106) and Robin Uthappa (51) could muster runs in Karnataka’s first innings as the team was bowled out for 272, conceding a first innings lead of 315. Harshal Patel was the wrecker in chief for Haryana, he got the breakthrough with the wicket of opener Lokesh Rahul, removed the dangerous CM Gautam in the middle order and returned to clean the tail, taking 5/79.
Following on, Karnataka’s batsmen applied themselves better. Rahul and Uthappa added 61 for the first wicket by stumps on Day 3. They added another 29 on the second day before they were separated. Uthappa and Kapoor dug in though, adding 152 in 217 deliveries before Patel had Uthappa caught behind for 137, his first century of the season.
Kapoor became the first Karnataka batsman to score a hundred in both innings of the match with his 100* in the second innings. He added an unbeaten 90* for the third wicket with CM Gautam (51) as Karnataka eked out a draw, reaching 330/2 before the game was called off.
