Hurricane Gayle sweeps KKR
Gaylestorm!
That one word summarises the way Team Royal Challengers thrashed the leaders of the IPL table Kolkata Night Riders in the own backyard. The 55-ball 102 was the hurricane that Kolkata didn't expect at all. A slow start to the chase of an imposing target of 172 on an Eden wicket which at best suited the batsmen who could play the waiting game and would play T20 with the guile of an eagle. But at worse the tricky wicket could have been the nightmare if played with a shallow mind.

Gayle and Dilshan played with the their deep understanding of cricket and waited for the opportune moment to pounce upon their opponents. It arrived in the fourth over and never stopped. Dilshan, who was having a difficult IPL at the top till this game, perhaps found the right partner in Gayle. His Calypso style of apparently indifferent attitude in the middle was mistaken by the Knight Riders. By the time, Kolkata woke up, it was too late. The match was already over!
Striking at will, Gayle provided the perfect impetus that Team Royal Challengers needed after three consecutive losses and a rained out match. Dilshan, who was the senior partner initially (in terms of runs scored) suddenly was a mere spectator as Gayle unleashed lethal power in his shots. The ease at which he was dispatching the white leather into the stands transformed the KKR fielders into onlookers. 82 of 102 runs came off boundaries. 7 sixes and all clean shots. This lanky cricketer has got long legs, but not much to run the singles or two's but to help him reach to the pitch and hit the ball scorching to the ropes or over it.
The win was a brutal reminder to the rest of the teams in IPL that this tournament is wide open and there is no favourite tag to any team. The batting depth of Team RC is again proved. But the crease on coach Ray Jennings' forehead would not vanish so easily. Team RC is bleeding through its bowling. The two seamers - Zaheer and Aravind - gave away 90 runs in their 7 overs which is a big cause of worry. Not everyday the batting will click, its the cohesion of all the departments that helps in a victory. Today's win is just the beginning of a long journey.
But, for a moment, lets rejoice and enjoy the pre-monsoon hurricane Gayle!
