I will root for India and just India: Kumble

Anil Kumble is a man with few words but a lot of action. But when he talks, he comes out with the right words and that too with lot of conviction and logic. Like the way he has led Chinnaswamy Stadium absolutely ready for the World Cup matches, including the one which was bagged at the expense of Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, but more of that later. A cricketer first, Kumble, now the President of Karnataka State Cricket Association and also the chief mentor of Team Royal Challengers, believes firmly that India has the right combination and the attitude to be the World Champions this time. {filedir_1}kumble-news.jpg

Kumble said, “I hope this turns out to be a great World Cup with the right result. I will be rooting for India and just India,” quickly adding, “At the same time we have some great teams in World Cup. Australia is in great form. England may have lost the One-day series against Australia but they are coming after The Ashes win, so they have a high confidence. I am sure that the India-England match will be a great one and thankfully they are playing in Bangalore.”

However, Kumble rooted for India in this World Cup, “Looking at India’s form, this is the best chance for them to win the World Cup.” He laid down his logic as he explained. “The team has the right balance and also they are in good form. Of course there are fitness concerns regarding 2-3 players and I think that they should address this as it’s a long tournament. If they overcome these issues and peak at the right moment, I am sure that India can go on to win the tournament.” But Kumble also cautioned, “You need to play consistent and good cricket for you to do that (to reach the final and win) and this team has that capability.”

What about the pressure of playing at home? But Kumble is not overtly concerned. “It has always been there. When you are playing at home, you always have pressure to cope with. It’s never easy to live up to expectations. However, this team has shown they can overcome pressure. Plus everyone, except a couple of guys, is experienced and has played a lot of international cricket. We have an experienced team and they should do well.”

Supporting the “Lets do it for Sachin” campaign, Kumble said, “Sachin has been an exceptional player for the last 21 years. And it will be fitting for all of us if we go on to win this World Cup,” said Kumble. “2003 was probably the closest he and all of us came to winning the World Cup and now with the final in Mumbai, there cannot be a better way to honour Sachin except winning the Cup.”

I cannot understand this World Cup for Sachin fever. Coming from ex-cricketers it smacks of sucking up attitude. Its an insult for Indian fans and other 14 players of the team. Sachin is not doing any favor to anybody by playing so long. he has got enough from the game and the country for doing so. Why not the world cup for all ex-cricketers and Indian fans. Sachin has no divine right to win anything just because he has played for 21 yrs.
