India beat Pakistan to reach WC Finals!

INDIA IN THE FINALS!

Misbah's mistimed skier triggered the roar of a billion, and kickstarted an early Diwali in India, a holi re-played. Reminiscing 1983, when Kapil Dev brought home the Cup for the first and the last time to India, pressure have already gone sky high on MSD to repeat the feat in 2011, 28 years later. And India won by 29 runs tonight.

In the World Cup Finals, for the third time, it was more of a sweetener to have defeated Pakistan in the semis which is adding the punch. The match provided some nerve wracking moments, but eventually, it was the cool nerves of India that made all the difference. India's bowling was at its best as the critics went into a huddle eating their words. Pakistan's pathetic fielding helped surely, as 5 catches, four of them off Sachin Tendulkar himself, were floored.

A boisterous nation watched with baited breath as India could amass only 260 on a wicket which promised a 300 plus score, especially after the way Sachin and Virender Sehwag started. But the mid innings blues by the middle order continued as Pakistan's Wahab Riaz bowled with immaculate precision and courage to return with figures of 5/46. His double strikes of Virat Kohli and Yuvaraj Singh complete unsettled the Indian middle order and if it was not for Suresh Raina's slow but assuring unbeaten 36, India would have been under deep trouble.

Sachin, for his part, was a fraction of his elements, offering 4 easy catches before being finally caught off the fifth one. His strokes were not fluently coming out of the bat, his confidence in the middle was dwindling after surviving a review on an LBW decision and a stumping on the next delivery which went to the third umpire. Yet the fact that he managed to score 85 under those conditions testifies a fact how much the Little Master is focused on the Cup this time. The missed catches, however, spelt doom for Pakistan as they cost them the match.

Defending 260 on a perfect batting strip at Mohali with the "weak" Indian bowling was always thought to be a dream. But Zaheer, Munaf and a resurrected Ashish Nehra bowled their hearts out to redeem their fortunes. Yuvraj, a first ball returnee with the bat, didn't disappoint with the ball as he picked up Pakistan's two best bat - Asad Shafiq and Younis Khan. But it was Harbhajan who produced the tricks. First he foxed a dangerously threatening Umar Akmal and then outsmarted boom boom Afridi. Those two crucial blows forced Pakistan to curve under the pressure and eventually fold up by 231.

If anybody had any doubts about the capability on this bowling department, they should shed this righaway. The bowlers have stuck to their regime of picking wickets, containing the runs and silencing the critics. They have tied a match from unbelievably losing positions against England, they have forced world champions Australia out of the Cup. They were criticised every time India faced a tough opposition in the league stages and in the knock outs. But every time, the bowling has maintained their unity in performing at a consistent level. Kudos to them!

Its the batting that is a concern now. Barring the top, and Yuvaraj in the middle, the middle orders are getting good starts but unable to convert them into big ones. Against Sri Lanka and against the likes of Malina and Murali, the pressure will be much more. It's a worry!

But for the moment, lets get soaked! Let the joy of beating Pakistan get settled first. India maintained its position of not losing a World Cup match to Pakistan. But they had also not won a single match against them in Mohali prior to the semi-final. However, India turned the tables tonight. Now its time to set the score in Mumbai. Remember 1996? Its time to settle the score Sri Lanka!
