India vs Bangladesh: Second Test: Day 2

It was a day of mixed fortunes for India as Bangladesh showed amazing resilience in neutralising the 311 lead that India took by lunch on Day 3. Thanks to Tamim Iqbal’s glorious 151, Bangladesh already sliced off 228 runs off the lead on this day itself.

Bangladesh might lose the Test in all probability by lunch Day 4, but the second Test will be remembered in the annals of their Test history as an “ordinary” team’s brave disposition on the field.

Brief Score:

Bangladesh (1st Innings): 233
India (1st Innings): 544/8 (Rahul Dravid 111 retired hurt, Sachin Tendulkar 143, MS Dhoni 89)
Bangladesh (2nd Innings): 228/3 (Tamim Iqbal 151, Zaheer Khan 3/63)

Tamim’s heroics, 151 off 183 balls with 18 hits to the fence and three over it, involved a 205 runs partnership for the second wicket along with Junaid Siddique (55) – a Bangladesh record for any wicket in Test cricket. It was Zaheer Khan who returned during the closing moments of the day to break the partnership by first removing Junaid and then Tamim in two successive overs to put an end to the romantic adventure of the Bangla team in this Test. Now its upto Mohammad Ashraful, Shakib Al Hassan and Mahmadullah to fend off the menacing Indian attack and emerge as the unlikely saviours for Bangladesh.

India, who already received a jolt after Rahul Dravid’s injury, got another when Yuvraj Singh was declared unavailable for the rest of the Test due to a ligament injury. With two batsmen short, it was left to MS Dhoni along with the tail brigade to extend the lead over Bangladesh. Dhoni did exactly that with gutso, with a polished 89. Bangla bowlers also helped the cause with bowling too many short pitched deliveries on a slow wicket. India finally declared at 544/8 declared at lunch as soon as Dhoni got out.

India is now looking to polish off the rest of the Bangla wickets as quickly as possible, without conceding too much of a lead.
