India through to U-19 World Cup semis
India U-19 won a low scoring thriller against Pakistan U-19 by 1 wicket in their U-19 World Cup quarter final clash at Townsville on Monday morning.
Superb bowling from Sandeep Sharma (3/24) and Ravikant Singh (3/43) had seen Pakistan U-19 being shot out for 136 in 45.1 overs after they had won the toss and chosen to bat first. Only opener Babar Azam (50), batsman Umar Waheed (27) and bowler Ehsan Adil (35) reached double figures for Pakistan while four batsmen got out on ducks and a fifth remained unbeaten on 0.
India were 8/3 after 5 overs in reply when RCB’s Vijay Zol joined no.3 batsman Baba Aparajith at the crease. The duo added 66 for the fourth wicket before Zol was run out going for a non-existent single on 36. Aparajith (51) carried the team ahead but he was the sixth wicket to fall when India just needed 17 to win. Seizing the opportunity, Pakistan’s bowlers struck as India staggered from 120/5 36.1 overs to 127/9 after 41 overs.
No. 8 batsman Harmeet Singh (13*) and no. 11 Sandeep Sharma (2*) however cut out all risks, taking 7 nerve wracking overs to score the 10 remaining runs required and seal a semis slot for India.
India will face New Zealand in the semi final at Townsville on Wednesday, August 23 at 5 am Indian Standard Time.
