India U23s thrash Nepal by 84 runs
India U23s continued their winning run in the ACC Emerging Teams Cup as they notched their 2nd consecutive victory, crushing Nepal by 84 runs in Singapore on Tuesday.
The Indian openers KL Rahul (88) and Unmukt Chand (61) added 118 runs for the 1st wicket after being put in to bat by Nepal. Rahul smashed 8 fours and 2 sixes on his way to becoming the top scorer of the match. Chand too attacked the bowlers, hitting 4 fours and 3 sixes, following which he was dismissed by Shakti Gauchan (1/42) in the 28th over.
Rahul then added 42 for the 2nd wicket with Manprit Juneja (9) before falling to Basant Regmi (3/90). Skipper Suryakumar Yadav (65) played a captain’s knock, supported by Ankit Bawne (25) and the duo were involved in a 90-run 4th wicket stand. At the end of 50 overs, India U23s had posted a decent 268/5.
Nepal began their chase rather slowly, with opening batsmen Anil Mandal (19) and Subash Khakurel (29) cautious while seeing off the new ball. Mandal was caught and bowled by captain Yadav (1/21) in the 18th over, with just 49 runs on the board. His partner Khakurel followed suit in the next over, as he was trapped plumb LBW by pacer Jasprit Bumrah (2/35). Bawne (3/36) and Sandeep Warrier (2/7) then ripped through the middle order, reducing Nepal to 99/7 in the 34th over. Sagar Pun’s unbeaten 52 went in vain as Nepal were restricted to 184 in 50 overs.
India U23s take on Afghanistan in their third match of the tournament on August 22 at Singapore.
