India vs England: Test for supremacy begins

The 2000th Test! The 100th Century! The 161st catch behind the stumps! A win struggling through the series or a smooth sail over the treacherous English weather? Conquering the Caribbeans wasn't easy, but its England that calls for greater commitment, pushing the limits to attain greater glory.

Which of one of the above will be worth the wait? The Indian team's English series has all the ingredients to be a potboiler, touching the frenzy of The Ashes series or perhaps, with the heightened activities around cricket in India, may overtake it. Under these circumstances, no doubt its the India's batting that is under pressure. The one-off practice match surely didn't inspire the confidence of the Indian team, but its one thing to fail in a practice match and another to succeed in the Tests. India, under MS Dhoni, has been consistently achieving the latter.

Under these circumstances, no doubt its the India's batting that is under pressure. The one-off practice match surely didn't inspire the confidence of the Indian team, but its one thing to fail in a practice match and another to succeed in the Tests. India, under MS Dhoni, has been consistently achieving the former.

Under Dhoni, the Indian team have never lost a Test series. But this English series will test the tenacity and the limits of this Indian team for sure. England has won 7 of the last 8 Test series they played, both at home and overseas. They are bowling better than ever before with the pace of Broad, the swing of James Anderson, the bounce of Tremlett and the sping and flight of Swann. Their batting also has looked good with Strauss, Trott and Cook leading with examples.

The strength of this English side can force any side in the world in awe of them. But does that take away the credits of the current Indian team? With an enviable batting lineup and with the return of Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, the confidence of the side has surely trebled. Though Sehwag's absence will be felt, but surely the greatness of the occasion and the importance of it will inspire the team to rise beyond their limits.

The crucial link in the Indian bowling will be Praveen Kumar, the new found sultan of swing. He rattled the West Indians, along with Ishant Sharma. Against Somerset, he wasn't used - probably a ploy by Dhoni to surprise England, if PK makes the final eleven at Lords.

The action at Lords, from Thursday onwards, will be eagerly watched as Sachin Tendulkar needs one more ton to reach 100 centuries in international cricket. Dhoni needs one more catch behind the wicket to become the most successful Indian keeper. The series verdict will also decide who stays on as the number one side in the world. If England surprises India by a 2-0, 3-1, 4-0 verdict, then its surely going to be England dethroning India, but I doubt things would be that easy.

What more can you ask from the 2000th Test in history and the 100th between the two sides?
