India win Under-19 Tri-Series
While team India lifted the Celkon Mobile Cup in West Indies, the India U-19s too put up a stellar performance to beat Australia by 8 wickets in the final of the Tri-series at Darwin on Friday.
After Vijay Zol won the toss and elected to field first, the 36 run opening stand was as good as it was going to get for Australia U-19.
Their batting line up was then ripped apart by the India bowlers and they were bowled out for 75 in just 24.4 overs. The innings was demolished in three mini collapses, each spanning three overs. The first took them from 36/0 to 45/3 between overs 7.1-10.4, the second saw them go from 58/3 to 61/7 and the final fall saw them go from 68/7 to 75 all out.
Deepak Hooda, the star of the match against New Zealand U-19 showed immense caliber in his bowling by picking up 3/22. He dismissed Damien Mortimer (10), Jake Doran (13) and Cameron Valente(0). Chama Milind, Abhimanyu Lamba and Kuldeep Yadav took 2 wickets each and Aamir Gani dismissed the last man Matthew Fotia to cap off an impressive debut tournament as Australia
India had 300 balls to make 76 runs but they only took 93 deliveries, completing the task in 15.3 overs. Ankush Bains made an unbeaten 40 and was helped by Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 20. India lost 2 wickets in their chase, rare failures for Vijay Zol (9) and Akhil Herwadkar (0), the two batting mainstays of India in the tournament.
Deepak Hooda was judged Player of the Match and Vijay Zol was judged Player of the Series, having lead India from the front, scoring 293 runs in 5 innings at an average of 73.25 with a strike rate of 78.13.
India U-19 tour Sri Lanka next with their first fixture scheduled to be played on July 23rd.
