Kaif carries Central Zone to Deodhar semis
Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman Mohammad Kaif struck a crucial knock of 50 in Central Zone’s successful chase of South Zone’s total of 224/9 in their Deodhar Trophy quarterfinal clash at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Friday.
The South Zone batsmen failed to build on their starts as Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Jalaj Saxena and Piyush Chawla applied pressure on them. Only captain batsman-wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik could stick around long enough, posting 52 as South Zone crawled to 224/9 in their 50 overs.
The Central Zone batsmen faced a similar problem, failing to carry on once they got a start. Mohammad Kaif stayed put though to hit a crucial half century and set up a platform for the lower middle order.
Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer Abhimanyu Mithun scared the opposition with the early wicket of Naman Ojha and the wicket of Chawla towards the end of the chase but his economy at 6+ was poor. Robin Bist and Ashish Yadav saw Central Zone through as they reached 225/6 in just 39.5 overs to clinch a four wicket win.
Central Zone will now face North Zone in the second semifinal of the Deodhar Trophy at Dharamsala on Sunday, March 18th.
