Kaif strikes ton against Karnataka
Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman Mohammed Kaif produced a ton to rescue his Ranji side Uttar Pradesh in their ongoing Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka at Shimoga.
UP began the day by cleaning up the Karnataka line up which had been 300/7 overnight. Bhuvneshwar Kumar got a wicket off the first ball of the day and took two more wickets in his next two overs as Karnataka were rolled out for 314.
UP lost an early wicket in the form of Tanmay Srivastava but skipper Kaif added 50 runs with opener Mukul Dagar for the second wicket and 56 with Parvinder Singh to take UP to a strong 138/2. Parvinder’s dismissal triggered a slide in which UP lost 4/34 to be reduced to 172/6.
Kaif had reached his 50 by then and with Bhuvneshwar Kumar put together an unbeaten 104 run partnership for the seventh wicket as UP ended the day at 276/6. The batsmen chose the bowlers they would face; they were helped by two of Karnataka’s top three bowlers being away on national duty in Australia and the third being laid low by injury.
Kaif brought up his century in the last over of the day and was not out on 101 off 223 balls at Stumps, UP trailing Karnataka by 38 runs. With a spot in the Ranji Trophy quarter finals on stake, Kaif will try to make sure UP do everything needed to get past the line.
