Karnataka dish out 159 run defeat to Delhi

Karnataka capped off a remarkable comeback beating Delhi by 159 runs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Tuesday after having conceded a first innings lead earlier in the game.

The home team had been bowled out for 192 on Day 1 after having decided to bat first. Only Stuart Binny (61) and skipper Vinay Kumar (28) could score runs as Parwinder Awana grabbed 5/81. Medium pacer HS Sharath (4/52) then ran through the Delhi line up to reduce them to 144/7 before Awana’s 74 helped them take the crucial first innings lead.

Vinay Kumar (2/74), Abhimanyu Mithun (1/64) and KP Appanna (2/17) all chipped in with wickets as Delhi was bowled out for 258 in their first innings, the lead restricted to 66.

By Stumps on Day 2, Karnataka’s openers had already erased the deficit and added 130/0. The line up dominated Delhi on Day 3, pitching in with as many as 6 half centuries in their second innings to post a total of 475 before declaring and setting Delhi a target of 410 to win. Runs came from Robin Uthappa (81), Lokesh Rahul (73), Manish Pandey (61), Stuart Binny (85), CM Gautam (71) and Abhimanyu Mithun (52).

Vinay Kumar and Sharath struck to ensure Delhi were 40/3 by Stumps on Day 3.

It took only 1.5 overs on Day 4 for Karnataka’s wicket hunt to resume as Abhimanyu Mithun had Delhi’s no. 3 Mohit Sharma caught behind. Old hands Mithun Manhas (80), Rajat Bhatia (63) and Sumit Narwal (41) were the only contributors as Delhi’s chase folded up at 250.

Wickets from Vinay Kumar (3/59), Sharath (3/40), Binny (2/60), KP Appanna (1/10) and Abhimanyu Mithun (1/72) helped Karnataka seal the 159 run win and take 6 points from the game.
