Karnataka pull victory against Bengal
Karnataka eased to a 4-wicket victory over Bengal, getting their campaign back on track in their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match at Indore on Friday.
Bengal won the toss and chose to bat. Karnataka skipper, Vinay Kumar took an early wicket, dismissing Subhomoy Das in the 3rd over. A 44 run partnership for the second wicket between Sayan Mondal (42) and Debabrata Das (31) and a 55 run partnership for the seventh wicket between Das and Arnab Nandi (37*) took Bengal’s total score to 151/7 in 20 overs. Vinay Kumar (2/30) took his second wicket in the last over and restricted Bengal to score only 10 runs.
Though they lost a wicket early in the 2nd over, Karnataka’s batsmen kept knocking off the required runs with small partnerships. Robin Uthappa smashed 41 (26b, 5x4, 1x6) before Lokesh Rahul (51, 33b, 5x4, 2x6) and Manish Pandey (20) added 49 for the fourth wicket.
Stuart Binny and Vinay Kumar saw Karnataka through with boundaries towards the end of the innings, Vinay hit a six when things got too close in the last over to help the team over the line with four balls to spare.
Karnataka play Baroda tomorrow afternoon in their final Super League match for Group B. Punjab, UP, Bengal and Karnataka are all tied on 8 points, all from Group B, each with one game to go except Bengal. Bengal are out since they have no games left to play; UP’s chances are very slim since their Net Run Rate is a dismal -0.050. Punjab’s NRR is +1.11 to Karnataka’s +0.04; the difference could be higher if Punjab beat UP convincingly in their match tomorrow morning. Karnataka will need to thrash Baroda and hope other results go their way for a shot to play in the final on Sunday at Indore.
