Karnataka slide despite Vinay efforts
Odisha claimed a 65 run outright win against Karnataka in their Ranji Trophy game at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Tuesday.
Vinay Kumar’s match haul of 10/89 had set his team a target of 245 runs for a win but they crumbled to 179 all out, conceding 6 points to Odisha.
Karnataka had taken a slender first innings lead of 11, posting 213 to Odisha’s first innings total of 202. Vinay (7/58) reduced Odisha to 105/5 in their second innings before allrounder Biplab Samantray (86) and wicketkeeper Subhrajit Sahoo (48) added 100 runs for the sixth wicket. The partnership helped them reach 255 before they were bowled out, setting Karnataka a target of 245 to win the game.
Day 4 saw Karnataka carry on from their overnight score of 43/1 but they were soon 85/4 as Odisha bowler Basant Mohanty struck with quick wickets. Stuart Binny and Amit Verma tried to steady the innings with a 57 run partnership for the fifth wicket before Deepak Behera broke the stand, leaving them at 142/5.
Biplab Samantray then dismissed Binny and Vinay off successive deliveries to deal a crushing blow to Karnataka’s chase.
CM Gautam was still in the middle but he couldn’t find partners to bat out the day with him. Medium pacer Alok Chandra Sahoo (3/27) cleaned up the tail, bowling Karnataka out for 179 with Gautam the last man to go.
Vinay Kumar’s 3/31 in the first innings meant he had a match haul of 10/89 but Karnataka sorely missed the services of Abhimanyu Mithun, who is recovering from a side strain.
