Mithun chips in as South Zone advance to semi-final
Baba Aparajith starred with a hundred and Abhimanyu Mithun chipped in with 3/40 in South Zone’s 11 run win against East Zone in their Deodhar Trophy quarter-final fixture at Guwahati on Sunday.
Aparajith fought the regular loss of batting partners at the other end to bring up his maiden List A hundred. Walking in during the second over of the innings, he shared a 95 run partnership for the second wicket Robin Uthappa who had to retire due to cramps after an aggressive start. Skipper Dinesh Karthik and Stuart Binny couldn’t build on their starts but helped build important partnerships as Baba gathered his 121 (129b, 10x4, 3x6). Sachin Baby (33, 19b, 5x4) and Vinay Kumar (13, 5b, 1x4, 1x6) slogged successfully at the end, taking South Zone to a formidable 284/5 in their 50 overs.
Abhimanyu Mithun drew blood with the wicket of East Zone opener Pallavkumar Das in his third over. East Zone stabilized, building on Ishank Jaggi’s 55 (67b, 5x4, 1x6) and skipper Wriddhiman Saha’s 77 (72b, 4x4, 3x6) to reach 191/3 in just the 38th over, setting up a sturdy platform.
Sandeep Warrier then provided South Zone a breakthrough by running out Govind Podder. Mithun then struck twice in two overs, getting rid of dangerous all-rounder Biplab Samantray and the well set Saha. East Zone lost 3 wickets for 10 runs, falling from 191/3 in 37.3 overs to 201/6 after 41 overs. Gokul Sharma and Abu Nechim slammed 53 off 52b in an unbeaten stand for the 7th wicket but the team still only managed 273/7 in their 50 overs, falling 11 runs short of the South Zone total.
South Zone will now face defending champions West Zone in the 2nd semi final at Guwahati on March 12th.
